From what I remember I think the shore-based fishing is pretty limited to a few spots which can produce some very nice fish though at the right time of year... Big barras, macks etc. Fairly obviously, the fishing out of Cairns can be awesome! With the Barrier reef on your doorstep, you can get lots of reef species, plus pelagics at the right time of year. I spoke to a couple of guys out there who had caught small black marlin from their tinnies!
You can also take trips up north where there's some of the best fishing in the world. A short plane ride takes you to Weipa which in April/May time fires absolutely red hot. A mate of mine went out a couple of years ago and saw shoals of longtail tuna covering several square nautical miles of sea. Unbelievable!
I'll try and get the names of some books that you should get for fishing info.

Luck barsteward.
Wish i were back there now. Not cairns mind, didnt like the place, but thereabouts!!
SSA lure passing by at a steady course and speed might well tempt the fish; but if you give them something to chase - they cannot help themselves.....

If you buy a boat you'll be absolutely sorted mate! No shortage of sharks if you fancy them!
Have a look at: http://www.fishingcairns.com.au
Otherwise, THE book you should get is the 'North Australia Fish Finder'. http://www.fishingcairns.com.au/page10-1.html
