Dog fish worth eating ?
Caught two dog fish ( 1 1/2 to 2 lb )yesterday. Had a quick look through here and saw the bit about boiling them to get the skin off.
Well got me self in right mess and they didnt look very appertising so they ended up in the bin.
To be honest if i catch any today i suspect there going straight back in.
Do they actually taste any good ?

when you boil them to skin them you are actually part cooking them as well, never liked boiled fish, always found skinning dogfish before cooking them your prefered way, they taste quite good but nowhere near as nice as spurdog, to me small pieces of spurdog done the same way as scampi taste better than scampi.

Yes they are good to eat. I also found the boiling water method messy, I ended up with loads a shriveled bits of skin, stuck to the fish. Maybe I did it wrong, because people on here reckon it is easier than my way of pulling the skin off with pliers.
You can serve them chip-shop style in batter, bake them, use them in fish stew or soup. Any recipe for white fish such as cod, whiting, pollack etc. will work well for dogfish.Last edited by richierobins; 05-11-2006 at 11:33.

You are not meant to boil them, but gut and wash them, then poor boiling water over them, or; dip them in a pan of boiling water, then dip them straight into cold ot iced water to stop the cooking process mentioned in earlier posts.
Gently rub with a scouring pad, and the skin comes away.
Taste pretty good. very good for people who dont like fish because of the bones. There is only one back bone and this, as with all other elasmobranches is cartilage.
SSA lure passing by at a steady course and speed might well tempt the fish; but if you give them something to chase - they cannot help themselves.....

same principle by the sounds of it, into boiling water, then into iced water, skin comes off Bobs your uncle.

The shin on a spur is thicker and so can be pulled off much easier. LSD's have thinner skin which is much harder to peel off. The boiling water method also works for ray wing apparently, tho i have never tried it.
