Most successfull fly fishing strategy
Fishing sandy estuaries with a Jim Teeny 300 grain line short leader and weighted shrimp tied upside down(ie with hookpoint upwards). Cast out the full line across the tide and let it sink to the bottom. When it all pulls tight strip the line back 1 yard at a time with a 10 second wait inbetween each pull. This causes the end of the line and the fly to make puffs of sand which really attracts the fish.Best day using this was at the Doom Bar at Padstow when I caught 3 bass 6 flounder 1 sea trout and 2 weaverfish, brilliant!

Hi Steve,
Good technique. What shrimp fly pattern do you use? Colour, size, style etc.

Tie them myself put a dumbell on the bend of the hook first and put a tail of hair of the appropriate colour off the bend of the hook then tie in a length of appropriate colour nymphskin.Catch in some of the same coloured Fritz and spiral the fritz up the shank and tie off bring the nymphskin up tight to the eye of the hook and tie off finish with a whip finish and you're ready to go!

That was a great result!!
I am new to Saltwater fly fishing (12months now) and I think its great. You get such a powerful fight from a whole range of species.
Gar fish on light fly tackle has to be my best day. The look like bill fish skating the surface when you get one up for the challange!!
Good luck in the future.

Ive always fancied the fly for bass etc around the stranraer area in scotland but i only have trout fly gear, is this suitable? Like will it deteriorate faster than the saltwater fly gear?

Have a natter to the guys in the tackle shop at Ardwell (think it's called Ardwell Marine but I haven't been up for a couple of years).
The bass photos on the wall in the shop are jaw dropping - all caught locally and quite a few on fly!!
As to tackle - I use the same as I use for reservoirs only when I get home I thoroughly clean it in fresh water..
