Carp were introduced to Britain as a food fish. Every monastery had a carp pond to provide fish for Fridays when the consumption of meat was forbidden. It is eaten throughout Europe.

Alot of carp is sold in Mercadona supermarket in Spain, like has been said a lot of Europeans eat them, in Poland they have them on christmas day with fried potatoes, that's why we have trouble with them netting ponds and lakes here, they don't understand why we put perfectly good food back in the water

Is there anywhere in Britain where one can keep coarse fish legally? I realise that the fish in artificially stocked fisheries are the property of the people paying for re-stocking, and keeping one's catch would be theft. Are there any canals or rivers where there are no restictions on taking fish?

Yes mate, plenty ! No law against taking fish to eat from waters with Riperian rights, town waters etc , unfortunatly its being somewhat abused currently and desperatly need changing.

Check this out then, Sainsburys helping homesick Poles ! ! ! Here.

carp have been bred for food for about the last 4000years.

the mirror carp came about in roughly 16th/17th century from the monestaries, to aid house wives. so they didnt have to spend as much time de-scaling them as they did the common.
    Species this year.......

cant be bothered to keep this updated, so......LOTS
