just a question...

there is probably a simple answer, but hey, thats what these forums are for.

i haven't done a lot of fishing with poppers, plugs and spinners yes, but not poppers.

this year in kenya i tried a yo zuri aile magnet popper of the shore, the problem was after 6 or so casts the line would fly off the spool in a big bunch.

obviously being wound on loosely on the retrieve.

the same happened the other week there when i went piking.

i am using a fixed spool, is it best to use a multiplier for this work??

The problem is simple.. slack line when you start the retrieve, this causes the to spool off.

Simple solution is to initialy grip the line against the rod when you start winding until then tension is taken up, this way the line is always wound on the reel under tension

Always trap the line against your finger on the retrieve if you're slowly pulling back it's the only way to know what's going on!

I have had that problem a lot with braid and a fixed spool and now firmly believe it arises because of insufficient tension on the retrieve. Especially bad with light weight lures and using sink and draw technique.

Dave's and Steve's solutions sound as if they would sort the problem.

If gripping the line between fingers on the retrieve annoys you, you can try putting a split cork (or foam rubber) bung in the nearest guide (ring) with the wider end outwards (so that it pulls right out of the ring and falls away if line is pulled off the reel....e.g. by a fish) just for the retrieve, experiment to get the right tension.

If you try that, just watch out that it doesn't get very hot and then damage line where you stop winding. Superbraid is especially susceptible to damage by heat.

I have had this problem, are you using a real where the spool is narrow. I had an okuma reel where the spool is slender and narrow and it encourages some stiff lines to spring off the reel too fast thus causing a bird nest where too much line is going out than the lure is pulling on the cast. I switched to an abu 105 where the spool is wider and the reel is still small and its been great. I can cast and retrieve small plugs and spinners on 15lb line without problems even when I have seen the line is not tight on the spool ,with light lures. Small wide spool reels cast nicer anyway. Im also looking to get a shimano exage reel next season which looks like it falls into the above catagory as well.
