    Big Apple Tackle stores

    Hi Ryan
There's certainly an Urban Angler's store that's recently relocated to 5th Avenue, but that's more of a SW Fly Fishing store. And whilst there is a big 'outdoor' store on I believe it's the intersection of Broadway and 37th(?) Street its range of tackle's somewhat poor.

Most of the better stores, I suspect, are going to be located in the suburbs. Is it perhaps worth dropping a post to the New York forum on http://www.reel-time.com? You may need to be specific and mention the type of tackle you're looking for, unless they just point out their local fly fishing store.

The other option might be to buy it over the Internet and have it delivered to your hotel. Often, if you're buying 'out of state' (not NY) you can avoid state purchase taxes.

    Hi Ryan,

When my partner and I were in the USA a couple of months ago (albeit in Texas) we found a good shop was Academy. They are a general sporting goods store but had a really good fishing section.

Just thought..... if you try www.academy.com and put in a zip code where you are going into the store locator, you might find one nearby.

It wasn't as good as the bass pro shop but still had loads of good bargains, especially on the price of rapala lures!!

Hope this helps you a bit.

    Malcolm.

This is on there web site, might be a bit far out from the centre of NY for you, 4-5 hr drive, but if you get a chance to go you won't want to leave, could spend a day in there.
    Bass Pro
    1579 Clark Street Road

As monktonlad says try Academy, it's excellant and cheap.
Panamas idea of ordering on line and getting it delivered is good idea, but to be in a Bass Pro is some experience.

Used to do all my shopping in the States as I used to visit up to 10x per year on business - thankfully now retired and don't have to go near the place. But, although BassPro were generally the biggest, they were not always the cheapest. I found that The "Sports Authority" chain generally had a good cheap selection and they had branches in most major cities so If the's one in New York - give then a try (I know there's one upstate in Albany because I've used.)

If you want really really cheap - the best I found was OkeeBug in Tulsa (31st & Sheridan)

There is a shop in NYC called Capitol Fishing - it relocated last year to I believe West 36th Street. Derfinitely worth visiting - they cater for most types of fishing.
