Advice On Kenya Wanted

Never left Europe - boat and beach fish U.K. with no records -thinking of a trip further as the photos are great:-

Any advice gratefully received! Im only interested in going for the fishing, like snorkelling and the beach, have no foreign language other than a little Greek!!!! I would like to know the costs of boat hire self drive, charter boats, cost of living, dangers, rip offs and anything to watch out for. Not into game fishing - want fish to eat! Dorada and similar.

I am considering a first trip (on a tight budget) out of Europe fishing and found their ad on WSF. Any views? I want to catch fish to eat - not interested in big game fishing! Cant afford it anyway! I would like some boat and beach fishing with a chance toi hire a small boat for self drive!

I placed the advert referred to in the two previous posts on WSF. As background I can advise that I, and my wife who is Kenyan, this year bought land on the Kenyan coast and built three cottages which are being rented out to tourists. We see it as a sound investment and a business venture, not to mention a second home in the sun. It is nice to get away from the British winter, to sun, sand and sea, when ever possible and not be subject to the restrictions and prices of a hotel. The cost of living is very low away from the hotels which tend to be expensive. Beer in a bar five minutes walk away from our accommodation (showing live Premiership football, I saw the Manchester United v Liverpool game there in October ) works out at about 60p a bottle (about the size of a pint)! This is the bar pictured on the website referred to in my advert.

Kenya is a superb holiday destination. It is safe, but as with anywhere else common sense precautions have to be followed. Sea fishing is one of Kenya’s many attractions, as well as safaris, beaches and sunshine. We are offering good quality, reasonably priced, accommodation and promoting the business from all angles (fishing being one). Information about local charter boats and prices can be found on Google by doing a search on Diani+Fishing. There is no shortage of tour operators and charter boats and my local family contacts are only to happy to point visitors in the right direction.

I am not aware of boats being available for private hire but that is not to say there are not any. However I would exercise extreme caution because of the strength of the currents off shore. I have never encountered any one fishing from the shore by rod and line but fish are there to be caught inside the coral reef . Locals set nets in the inter tidal zone and sell their catch. Of course the size of these fish does not compare with what the charter boats catch in deeper water. I was surprised by the extent of the rise and fall of tide, certainly the biggest I have witnessed outside the UK. The beaches are vast and it would be possible to find a fishing area, well away from bathers, especially on week days. I can testify that the fish caught in Kenyan waters make very good eating when freshly cooked.

Reasonably priced flights to Kenya can be obtained, http://wwwcheapflights.co.uk is probably the best bet.

there is virtually no shorefishing in kenya as almost the whole coast is a marine reserve and you can't even take dead shells or corals

saying that i had 1 go at watamu this year and hooked 2 fish, one ran 30 yards and spat the lure, the other ran 200 yards and reefed me.

don't know what they were, possibly a trevally of some kind, not fast enough for a barracuda.

depending where you are staying you should get a local fisherman willing to take you out to the reef quite cheaply, take some jigs and rapala lures with you

Sounding good so far! Might even convince my wife!!! We are retired (early!) and have a limited budget so apperciate any advice!

It is my understanding that, although cheap, local operaters providing trips to the reef vary their prices according to the season and it is cheaper to higher a sail boat than one with a motor.
