Hi guys / girls

Thinking of using a 30lb braid for light spinning and plug fishing, as I have never attempted this before is there any advice from the more experienced amongst you?
Do I need a mono leader to give the line some stretch?
How much mono backing do I need to load the reel with and how far to the top do I load the reel with braid?
I am using a Penn Liveliner 6000 which holds 270 yards of 12lb mono.

i dont know if you can receive Irish Angler Magazine in the UK. I have a new series on saltwater lure fishing beginning on January 11th. This is a five part series dealing with a lot of help and advice for beginners on lure fishing - if you cant get the mag as soon as its published i can mail you the word documents with no fotos!

In the meantime make sure to avoid tangles and the most likely reason for tangles probably lies with your fishing reel. This may sound strange I know but as you retrieve your spinner or lure you will of course notice the way the spool moves up and down as you turn your reeels handle. At the same time the bail arm moves around the spool thus winding the line onto the spool. This process is known as ‘Line- lay’. If you have poor quality line lay on your spool you will definitely have problems with braid. If the line is not laid onto the spool in close parallel coils the next time you cast the line will fly off the spool in an uneven fashion pulling the coils off the spool into a huge tangle like you experienced. I would recommend that you change your reel before next season to one, which has a ‘slow oscillating system’. Check also that your braid has a round profile and that your casting is smooth and progressive.


Always fish with about a metre of mono/fluoro as a leader joined to the braid with an allbright knot

Your advise and tips are very much appreciated.

The line lay on my current reel seems very good when using mono but will have to see when I try the braid.
Not sure if I can get hold of the magazine in question, sounds interesting though, it would be good if you could email me the text though if you would be so kind? pm me and i'll give you my email address.

Go with braid, I changed in 04 and would never go back to mono for spinning. It has so much more feel to it and will cast a hell of a lot better than mono. For interest I use Berkely whiplash pro 30 lb (about .01 dia).

Very occasionally when I get slack I will end up with a tiny knot usually whilst using poppers and near to the lure itself.

Before you put the braid on the spool put on 20 metres or so of mono, then attach the braid to this. Braid doesn't grip like nylon and can just revolves around the spindle when you try to lock the drag. I made this mistake first time I used it and didn't half feel stupid, once I'd worked out what the problem was ...

To facilitate casting you need to load fixed spool reels right to the lip of the spool.

I'm not sure how important it is to have mono between the lure and the braid.

If you want to avoid the bother of attaching the mono to the reel, then the braid to the mono, apparantly you can put a few turns of amalgamating tape around the reel. That will adhere to the reel and gives the braid something to bed into.

The tape needs to to be wound on fairly tightly according to the instructions.
