i would say alot depends on the rod being used, the tuning of the reel (a reel tuned for casting isn't necessarily how you'd use it on the beach), casting style, etc.

CP if I guess he's using 5 oz on a Greys GRX sport, a leader (of course) and the spool nearly full,

if he changes to 2 small blocks and light oil and he has a sound technique, would he top out at about 160-190 yd or so (in the field) ?

with line that thick (let's assume it is 0.40 mm) would it make much difference whether you used OTG or pendulum for maximum distance ?

use it with 6 ozs on my greys apollo, usually with large clipped down baits on pulleys

Without knowing what style you can cast, the short answer to the question is that you should be able to get more than 100yds. Do yourself a favour and get some coaching you won`t regret it. You will usually get some tips too about which line to use, leaders etc.,
Just a little bit of advice: Try 12 or 15lb Daiwatournament line, or similar with 60lb leader and also use a 150gm ( 5oz ) instead of 6oz. I`m sure that this will make improvement. But get some proper coaching!
    All the best, Rich

I'm guessing you have a good reason to use 20lb mainline (instead of 12 or 15).
With a big bait, unless there is a gale blowing from behind you, air resistance will both have a significant effect on maximum distance and mean you don't want to reduce braking on the spool as much as we have been suggesting.

If you do get some coaching (and if the end gear you are using is needed for the marks where you may want to cast a long way) tell the coach to make some of the lesson for using big, wind-resistant baits:- he or she may use something like a hockey ball or hard-rubber 'tennis' ball as a substitute for both a 6oz or 7 oz weight, plus the large bait.

And if you have to go for maximum distance sometime you will probably find that the shortest pulley rig that can work will fly better (still true even where the bait is clipped close behind the lead .... I'm guessing the swivel, big beads and clip at the top of the bend in the rig make the difference ?)

a clipped down pulley 20lb line an appollo im assuming your fishing rough ground so 100 yards should be more than ample i dont know many rough marks that even need that sort of diastance a 40-50 yard lob is more than enough

if you wanting bigger distance try stepping down to a 18lb line or a ultra low dia 20lb line

yeah ther is good reason 4 the heavy gear, extremely rough ground, chances of good conger and very strong tide pull, i do use as short a pulley as i can just because it is less likely to tangle in the strong flows, didnt realise this would gain me more yards tho, good bonus.
am thinkin i will try and have a lesson or two as my style is quite basic, sort of a self taught semi pendulum.
can hit bigger distances with small baits and lighter line on my f/s set up, was just wondering what the limits are of my heavier gear.
    thanks 4 the advice
