Grander Marlin
The pinnacle of a Big Game angler's career to catch a thousand pound plus Marlin? Yes, probably for most. I've seen a small number in my travels and even once, off Gran Canaria, had a strike from one. It failed to hook up though!
Just thought I'd include this link - http://www.terrytri.com/wheresterry.html - to an angler's web site - he's an editor of a US fishing magazine - who's fortunate enough to pursue them around the world. He's a bit of a self publicist, but he's certainly been to 'one or two' places!
Interestingly places that keep showing up that are easily accessable to UK anglers are Madeira and La Gomera, in the Canaries. (And in Big Game terms boats in Madeira are 'relatively cheap'.) Obviously you're not going to catch lots of fish there, like you might in Cape Verde and Ascension Island, but they are of high average size. And Terry's not alone in re-visiting Madeira and La Gomera, there're very much on the scene for that small nucleus of anglers obsessed with 'granders' and world record sized fish.

I believe Jason Pipe on "Bocinegro" did quite well off La Gomera last year
Jason R. Pipe [bocinegro@hotmail.com]
and I've heard he is cheaper than Madeira. I also hear he is putting together packages (arranging convenient accomodation on La Gomera) for people who are happy to fly to Tenerife and take the ferry across.

La Gomera
Hi Roger
From all accounts Jason had some excellent results - over 40 releases in what wasn't in the end a full season. In fact Matthias was also talking about taking a boat across there this year.
