    They come in three sizes

    130mm X 36gm
    150mm X 52gm
    200mm X 120gm

I started experimenting in the back end of last year with 150mm X 52gm . I had a few Bass on it too. The only advantage I've found yet, over the Yo-Zuri Mag popper is that I can get a lot more distance, than the 18gm Yo-Zuri.

They have a pretty good action through the water and I'm going to give them a fair crack of the whip this year, because once in a while a good lure comes along and this could possibly be on to rival the Yo-Zuri.

Saying that tho' it's goin to take something special to beat the Yo-Zuri 18gm.

Don't be tempted to part with your money and buy any 28gm Yo-Zuri poppers to get extra distance, as they don't have half the action that the 18gm has, or the fish catching ability.

I've got one of the monster poppers and am taking it to Cuba to try on large jacks and tarpon in April.

If it's outright distance you're looking for, Raider do a series of plugs in 3-4oz that cast like stink - 150yd is possible. They're aerodynamically superb, like a flat, skinny, two-sided doorwedge, if you can imagine that (!!!) and they have a skipping action that attracts predators to them. They're the preferred lure for surf fishermen in Baja California (roosterfish and jacks go for them) and I've had fish on them in Caribbean and Seychelles.

Thanks mm that's really useful info. I've tended to use the 28gm Yo-zuri Mag Poppers on my 15gm-35gm spinning rod but I do have one of their 18gms in the lure box too so I might start using that for comparison. I just assumed that the 28gm would be better suited to that particular rod.

At the moment I'm looking at picking a few larger lures over the next year or so for my heavier spinning rod in preparation for a trip abroad next year. I've got a few 45-60gm spinners for it but as far as lures go only a 43gm Yozuri Hydro Popper and a quite large 90gm Yo-zuri diving one (I'm not sure what it's called - I got it from Hong Kong).

Do you know who stocks the Raiders Mark? They sound interesting - I wouldn't mind checking them out. Also Mark have you used spinners when fishing abroad or are lures just a much better option in general?

Thanks Danforth for bringing that Grauvell popper to my attention. I'll probably pick one up next time I need to place an order with Veals. I was actually thinking about starting up a thread on heavier lures myself.

    Cheers.

Raiders: I picked up some trade samples from what used to be Harris Angling/now Harris-Sportsmail/ some years ago, and still have a few left from my Mexico trip. They're North American but I've only seen them in Baja California on my travels. I'm sure you'll be able to get them somewhere, now the information superhighway that is the internet is open ....

Let us know where you're planning to go abroad and I'll tell you what I know. Maybe best open a new thread so others can contribute???

There are few better poppers than the Halco ones out there, see this link : http://www.halcotackle.com/roosta_135.asp

They cast like a bullet and do not turn over in flight, some of the smaller ones can work for bass, larger ones kill abroad for various species. The secret to lures like these is high quality components.

Thanks Mark - the trip won't be for a while yet - probably not till 2008 - but I've recently been reading a few of your and others posts both here and on the Cubamania site. I figure using a heavier spinning rod would be a good way to cover dead bait, live bait and lure situations but here in the UK the range of heavier lures available is a bit limited. Anyway I've got plenty of time so as you say I'll just search the Internet and I'm sure a few useful ones will pop up. The Grauvell looks like a useful addition to the kit - I'll probably end up ordering a few others from the States.

I emailed Veals yesterday regarding what weight they are stocking in The Grauvell Super popper and they've replied saying they have the 120gm Super Poppers in pink and also have 36gm and 52gm Surf Poppers in blue mackerel. Henry do you know where you can get the Halco poppers - you don't seem to be able to buy them through the Haco site?
