Bali, Java, eastern Indonesia report
Hello everyone. I just wanted to start a report on the amazing fishing action out of Indonesia. This year has been nothing short of stellar. The GT action from shore is where we have been doing the best recently.... Enjoy the pics.

Even some Dog Tooth after a beach spearing session!

Look for more soon after another trip....
Cheers,
Cyrus

Hi Cyrus
And firstly welcome to the forum. And some more posts please, lots of Brits holiday in places like Bali.
Some great GTs! The water over that reef complex in the second shot looks ideal. Do you lose many when they run seaward of the reef?
I was surprised to see those Dogtooth apparently relatively shallow if the diver got them. Normally they're encountered at much greater depths.
Dave
PS One last point whereabouts in Indonesia were you fishing?

Indonesia Report
Hello Pananma Jack... Nice to be a part of the forum and thanks for the welcome.
First of with the fishing. Yes spots have some reef around, but that also keeps the fish around. The fish do make runs into the reef. That is why you need to keep the rod tip way up the whole time. If the fish turns its head the fight is usually over. But most of our spots have a nice channel that the fish run out making landing them very possible. Patience and keeping your rod tip up are the keys.
That diver is me. I got those Dog Tooth in a key hole reef pass just off the beach. The key hole where they were concentrated was about 30 meters deep and the fish were schooling at about 10 - 15 meters. Yes I was lucky to have that many Dog Tooth in relatively shallow water. But it happens often down here.
I hope to be able to guide or simply send anyone from the forum in the right direction if they are headed down this way!
The GT pictures are of my best friend and a client we had last trip.
Cheers,
Cyrus

Location
Sorry Dave. Forgot about your last question. The location is in a Jungle off the south east tip of Java in the pictures your seeing. It is a backcountry hike to the location from a more common surf spot called G-land.
My family has been out in that jungle since the early 70's. My father, Bill Boyum, was the first guy to surf there.
There are a multitude of great fishing and diving spots in Bali as well. The best fishing I have come accross is out in Sumba in eastern Indonesia. The islands are full of spots!
Cheers,
Cyrus

OK, I'm interested and know that there are plenty of fish in the area because I've dived off the Western tip of Bali and been very impressed with everything from coral and footballer trout to monster barracouda swimming arround with me.
How is the local freshwater dishing ? Are there any Kelah (Mahseer) ?

More info.
Hi Ken. Nice to hear from you. Yes, as you saw in west Bali, the potential for world class fishing is here.
First on your freshwater question. No there aren't any options for quality freshwater action until you get way out east. I think Papua has some Baramundi and other fresh water fish that would do the trick. But here in Bali, Java, and just east of Bali we focus primarily on catching Gaint Jack Trevally off the beach, GT.
Our true world class location for this kind of action is located out in a jungle reserve known as Blambangan. There is a famous surf spot, G-land, that we base camp out of for the trip in and out. But the rest of the time is spent back country fishing and camping about 3hrs plus hike into the jungle from the G-land camp. All your gear is portered in and, and great care is taken to keep you as safe as possible. But you are out there.
The fishing around the location is all shore fishing, and catch rates are amazing. We land fish from 5 - 100lbs all day long. I would say most average in the 15 - 35lb range. GT are an amazing fight. Catching them from the shore adds some challenge to this fight, but overall we find it is more enjoyable and productive than from a boat.
Anyway, if you would like more information on cost and details I will happily send some info to you. Email me at jungleulua@gmail.com to get that started.
Enjoy some more pics of the location mentioned above.
Cheers,
Cyrus Boyum

Hi cboyum,
I'm sure I recognise your friend Michael. It would have been from Hu'u in Sumbawa back in about 1997. He was catching GT's there as well.
Does that sound possible?
