    Live Sandeels

    Evening

Im just back from fishing over in the channel islands, was in one of the tackle shops and while there noticed boys coming to buy live sandeels, anybody know how I could get my hands on some around Belfast/Co Down? Either catch or buy them.

    Cheers

Good place to catch your own sandeels is at Murlough Bay at Dundrum. Get them at low time before the terns and gulls get them. Can catch in fine mesh nets but I find it easier to get them buried in the sand from pools that you see the gulls feeding in. Use a good stiff rake or fork to dig them up as they bury just under the surface. My spaniel dog is an expert at digging them as well. I use a battery operated air pump with air stone to keep them alive. The only thing about murlough bay is the walk to and from it and especially on the way back with a heavy watery load. Sand eels are not that hardy and you will find some do die in transit but make good bait anyway dead or alive. I've one arm about 6 inches longer than the other because of this
Some great mullet seen down at the mouth of Dundrum Bay if they can be enticed to take something. Seals are aplenty lying along Ballykinlar sands so there must be some good fish in the area.

Has anyone else fished the area for flatties or Bass???
