Beach Rod
I am going to start beach fishing again. I stopped about 20 years ago and sold the tackle.
I have bought a Penn 525 and I was wondering if anyone could advise me on a rod. I have about £120 to spend and would like something that would cope with clean and rough ground.
Many Thanks.

forget all the new rods, look for a decent S/H Zziplex 2500 PTX, or perhaps a Federation (bit more zing in the blank). If a DreamMachine GS Special Match should appear, that is probably the best of the lot, I still have 2 now 20 years old, and no they're not for sale!! In the right hands all these rods are capable of putting a bait out of sight, indicating a crab farting as it walks past the bait, and when a fish is hooked, is a pleasure to fight a good fish with. As a matter of interest, a few years ago we tried a test with a 2500, and we managed an indicated pull on a spring balance of 27lb!! That sort of pressure would land any fish that swims in the U.K. I reckon.

Veals are doing the Penn PPT Jetstream EVO1 for £125. This rod had an RRP of £275 when it came out and is great value for money IMO.
Its a 4 piece and therefore fits into the boot of your car or can be taken on hols.
Excellent rod IMHO and also highly recommended by much better anglers than me!!
If you have spent more than £100 through their website then you can get a further 5% off your purchases through them for ever. Veals are a highly recommended company by many who have posted on this site: reasonable prices and excellent service/speed of delivery.Last edited by groomyd; 21-04-2007 at 22:09.

I would go for a second hand rod like Phil has said, if you keep your eye out you will find a good rod for that price and it will out perform anything you can buy new for that price.
I have bought 3 second hand rods and all of them are better than what I could have got new for the money. I got a Century Kompressor that had only been used once for £150, a Zziplex Primo for £124 from Ebay and an old Zziplex Formula T for £65! The formula t was a little untidy but for the money I paid it was still a very good blank and is great for casting and bite detection.Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.

rrp..means jack!!for example does anyone think the new surfmaster range from penn is worth 100 notes.
..buy a greys rod from certain retailers and get one free.
..tells you the real value of the rods..IMO.not saying they are no good.but they must be over priced in the first place..
