Fishing Western Australia, Steep Point.
G'day from WA. (Western Australia)
This is our little spot. Its Called Steep Point. The greatest land based game fishing spot in the world.
Heres a couple of pictures of where we fish.
We do fish off the top of here!!

And John is really fishing!

He's tied to the SVU.

This is a Narrowbanded Spanish Mackeral caught from the rocks, its only about 6 metres up from here.

This is a favourite spot for fish to get you to sit as they try and make there way out to sea.

This is a Samson fish, so called because of its fighting prowess.

Here is one of the real game fish, a large Sailfish, caught from the rocks, by a mate, Tailor Marc.

I'll post some more if the replies request such!

mmmmm - Very jelous here

I assume this is off the west coast somewhere?
Would love to see more pics if you have any
SSA lure passing by at a steady course and speed might well tempt the fish; but if you give them something to chase - they cannot help themselves.....

One of my best ever pictures

Not the best photo of Eddie, but 45lbs of Mullaway

Eddies not very photogenic!! Again a nice Spangled Emperor, about 13Lb. Great eating.

And who says cliff fishing isn't fun

A closer shot, and remember its 90 yards straight down. PS note the number plate.

Heres an ariel view of the surrounding area, clearly showing the "Faultline" running across the bay. The water from where we fish, "The Oven" is about 80 feet deep just out in front. Can anybody tell me why it would be called the Oven?

I'll post some more later.

Western Australia
Tremendous photographs Stax! Thanks for sharing them with us.
Just a few questions.
That's not by any chance a 'good old' Alvey reel you're using, is it? Many years ago they used to be very popular in this country particularly for fishing the rock ledges off our North East coast. Didn't you turn the reel sideways on - like a fixed spool, spinning reel for casting?
Do you ever target Marlin from the rocks? I recall there's similarly a place on Australia's East coast when they target them, smallish Blacks.
And finally there're obviously some places where you can get down to land fish but, as you mentioned, some of the prime spots are 90 metres up! How do you land them from there? I recall off the Western end of the Algarve (Portugal) a few old guys used to fish commercially with rod and line from even higher cliffs. There they used to attach a weighed wicker basket to their line, run it down open end first and then retrieve it with an attached line. But they were only catching Bass and Bluefish up to 10 to 15lbs in weight.
All the Best
Dave

When we fish from the "high cliffs" we do use the "good old Alvey" reel you mentioned. The rod is a 10ft super stiff 50lb class brute.
We target Snapper, Baldchin and Emperor from these cliffs with the largest typical fish being about 14-15lb. Mostly 5-10lb.
To bring the fish up the cliff face it is almost impossible to wind the reel so we simply take the reel off the rod (carefully) and walk away from the cliffs edge with the reel in hand. The guy with the rod (who is tied to the car) stands at the cliffs edge holding the rod over the edge. As the person with the reel gets about 80 metres away the fish is swung over the edge and onto the ground. Make Sense.
The line is retieved onto the reel and the reel reattached to the rod to start over.
Casting is always fun. 10 metres out 80 metres down.
When we fish for Pelegic fish we are only 6 metres up. From this height we use a cliff gaff to get our catch.
As to the Marlin....
Marlin have been hooked at Steep Point, but landed I don't know of any that have been tagged or landed. I'll ask the ranger next time I talk to him.
You do see the Sailfish and Marlin chasing smaller Peligic fish up to about 30lb.
Imaging trying to use that for bait.
"nonsense said the old man, just cast it like any other bait"
More photos to come.

Cheers Stax! Awesome pics! This place is up near the top of my wish list. I did the LBG thing a couple of years ago on the East coast of Oz and in NZ whilst travelling. Not much joy (we were there in the winter), although I did hook a couple of kingies and had a decent longtail tuna off the rocks. I heard whispers of a Black being taken off Steep point a couple of years ago, although that could be a vicious rumour! I met a guy whilst LBG'ing who had a 240lb black off the rocks a couple of seasons ago (I think in 2004?) at Jervis Bay. They had to cut it in half to get it up the cliffs!!
Get some more pics of those Spanish Mackeral up! There awesome fish (great eating too). Must be something else hooking them from dry land!
