New to multi's?

My missus has just bought me a Greys GRX-S for my birthday

, I've spent what feels like a lifetime reading threads on multipliers, and think I've sussed it. Would a Daiwa SL20SH reel suit this rod, and more importantly would it suit me as a multipier noddy??

I want to learn with this combo and don't want something that will bite me on the backside and birdie at every opportunity. I'm new to this lark so I would say my fishing to be mixed ground (to cover everything). Another plus I have seen with this reel is that they can be had for £60, which won't break the bank, but are supposedly reliable. Your comments/advice please, be gentle though

that reel will be fine. you shouldnt have too many problems with it and it will happily go with that rod.

SLOSH would be fine certainly, but i'd also think about going for an abu 6500 mag. Lovely little reels, and for a multi virgin, I think the mag brakes are a lot nicer than the friction based ones. Similiar price as well.

If you get into multipliers then i'm sure you'll end up with both in your reportoir anyhow.

You wont go to far wrong either way to be honest - but its worth keeping an eye out on ebay for bargains for either.

Dont know anything about the Slosh, I only use Abu, Slosh20 is a very good, reel as too the Penn 525 , But if you are new to multis suggest you try a reel with mag breaks as apposed to plain friction, You can set them up to suit your style of casting , and gradually decrease the Mag effect as you get more profficient
Stick with a multi if you can , I know that a lot of people swear by Fixed Spools, They have their own place in Angling, Its what suits YOU that matters

The SL20SH is an excellent reel, robust and reliable but it lacks the sophistication of the ABU Mag Elites and the Penn 525 Mags. That said, the lack of magnetic brakes didn't cause those of us who learned to use multipliers before they came along too many problems.

However, Magnetic brakes are an advantage to a beginner as they can be adjusted on the beach and they usually have a greater range of adjustment. Start with them full on and keep backing them off a step at a time until you feel as if the reel's going to overrun and them put them back on a step and there's your optimum setting.

If your budget won't stretch to either of the above then there's the Okuma Magnetix which can be had for around £50. I've never used one but I've read good things about them on this forum. Ceramic bearings are also availabale for them so you can upgrade later if you wish.

if your not fishing too rougher ground then i would go for a 7HT or elite. the slosh doesn'tr cast as far but has great cranking power.

i think mags are a waste of time. when you've set the reel up correctly you shouldn't have to change the speed much. i got a 525 super mag expecting it to be the muts nuts but the only thing i like is the retrieve speed. i'm now gonna put different gears into my elits and get rid of the mag. the mags don't do much and and can be accidently changed to fast.

your reel will be fine but its not so much what reel you use when you first start but several other factors come into play,the most important being MAKE SURE THE LINE IS LEVEL on the spool,the single most cause of birdies is having the line built up on one side and down on the other, next cast smoothly, dont jerk the cast, next adjust the tension so the weight slowly drops to the floor when you take your thumb off the spool. follow these rules and you should be ok. when you get the hang of it (it is well worth the effort and line cut off the spool,)you can look to getting a better reel. you cant beat ABU.best of luck,stick with it ,it realy is worth it

. I'm just waiting to hear back from my local shop to see if they can match a price i found on T'internet, but either way i'll have my new toy very soon.

I've said it before, but this forum really is great for noddys like myself
