Countdown to Team Extreme's dover meet

Ok, with just about a month remaining before our first (hopefully of many) trip to dover breakwater, things are beginning to move on a little now.

the main object of this post, over time, is to explain the meeting time / place, simple comp rules, who's coming, etc,

As i mentioned before, with everyone paying £15, this will leave a prize fund of £100.

    so,

    the comp

    1) a max of 6 hooks is permitted. this means if you have 6 feathers on a trace, your other rods need to be outta the water!
    2) a max of 3 rods are permitted (big wall !)
    3) it will either be measure and release - samf points system, or weigh and release (if i can get enough scales for the length)
    4) in the even of a tie-break for a prize, we'll think something up ! (unless you wanna fight over it, or split it)
    5) prob a walk off.
    6) mackeral /scad do not count, (though maybe we can debate if they're caught on single lures such as a dexter / jelly worm ?)

    more ?

    prizes

    £15 heaviest bag (theoretical bag)
    £10 biggest round
    £10 biggest flat

those are the usual for any comp, to make this more interesting, and open to all, match fishermen and recreational alike, the following are also being given out,

prizes for catching a fish of a certain species, that weighs closest to a 'sealed' pre-determined weight, this could be anything from 8oz, to 5lb, and it's 100% pot luck !

    so,

    bass £10,
    dogfish £10
    pout £10
    whiting £10
    flattie £10

that leaves £15, this £15 will be in place of a 'wooden spoon' award. this can be given for a number of reasons, it could be the biggest cock up or catastrophe, the most 'unlucky angler' for a spectacular blank, or an event that just made us laugh our nuts off, Smoothy, Chris, Mark_S and myself will choose the winner who will essentially have a free trip !

    other prizes
i am also trying to sort out some prizes for this, now we aren't doing this for charity, so i don't expect to get loads of tackle or anything of the like. but i do have a few ideas for small prizes. im personally supplying about 15 'team extreme' stainless travel mugs, some tip tape, etc.

i might get a few t-shirts done, not sure how many yet, they'll be about £8.50 each if interested.

    sponsors ?

If anyone wants to sponsor some prizes, ie supply a prize, you can name what the prize is for, remember this is all for a laugh though.

anyways, here's the 'coming list', which will be edited as time goes on.

When the book opens.........Heap your 'hard earned' on me for the 'cock-up' prize. I've been practicing hard for that one recently!!

This is shaping up to be a stonking meet Hugh, fair play to you guys for the organisation.......top ideas for the prizes too, gives everyone a chance of walking away with something.

    Can't wait.

Rats - keep forgetting to send the money. Will do so ASAP Hugh!

Superb organisation, Hugh - its gonna be a goodie. Hope I don't draw a low number for the walk off - I have never fished the breakwater before so won't have the foggiest where to fish! And very glad I'm one of the judges for the wooden spoon because if there is a spectacular blank to be had I'm the man just now...

lol Mark ! it's hard to blank on there, although someone said the other day that ebb tides aren't great, high is about 10pm, then low at 4am ish, so we'll fish up too,

re prizes, if anyone wants to put up a prize, and come up with the reason you can win it, the feel free to pm me !

    GEAR you'll need....

this is just my own personal experience,

big leads, the minimum you'll need is a 6oz, and that's for a 3oz bass rod hanging over the side ! anything less will be waterskiing on the top in no time !

    outside....
for any kind of cast away from the wall, i normally use 8 or 9oz gemini style grippers, ie a long cylindrical lead with a screw on cap at the bottom, any rig you like ! pulleys, sliding ledgers, clipdowns, flappers, etc !

inside, 7oz gripper, bend the wires out to 90 degrees, smaller hooks on flappers,

(FishyRob... a few 8-9oz d-vices might be handy, extreme testing !)

Long leaders.... at low tide you don't want to be handlining a fish up with a knot between it and you !

make sure you have spare stuff if you have it, you won't be able to get back to the car if you need it !

Been trying for smoothies all week and while all and sundry have been hauling them in willy nilly I have managed to lose five. Straightened hooks, snapped snoods you name it. Last night in the Worthing match latched onto what was definitely the biggest smoothie I've ever hooked and after 5 minutes of scrapping lost it in the surf - it gave me a slack line bite so I got loads of weed on the line and the leader knot jammed in my tip ring. As I backed up the beach trying to drag it out a wave rolled the fish up faster than I was walking backwards, line slackened and fish got off. Used several profane words! Not that it would have made much difference to the outcome of the match as the winner had over 62lb!

Dump the rod and handline it in Mark. Worked for me the other night and at least you keep in touch with the fish in the waves and backwash.

Tie some propper rigs, 30lb snoods, 80lb rig body, big gun hooks, and bully the buggers! You'll soon have plenty on the beach!
