Trevally worries
Hello all,
I plan to go on a sea fishing trip to the Andamans, where the GT's run large. After hearing about their line breaking fame can anyone with any experience tell me the best way to go about it?
I plan to use an uptide rod with home made poppers, using 80 lb braid and size 4/0, 5/0 trebles. Any suggestions!!

Giant Trevally
Hi Indian Angler
It may seem a strange way to start, but please don't mis-interpret my remarks - I'm purely trying to be constructive.
I've never personally fished for GTs. The Jacks I've caught - Amberjacks, Roosterfish, Almacos, Bluefin, Crevalle and Black Jacks - are all immensely strong, but not quite in the same class as GTs. They are real Tackle Destroyers. And a number of my friends have learned salutatory lessons attempting to 'under-gun' them.
It's extremely unlikely that your up-tider will cope with a GT. It just doesn't have the power to stop and effectively play a 50lb plus Jack. And especially matching it to 80lb braid - it's likely to break on the very first fish - and that's a recipe for a ruined holiday.
Realistically you'll need specialist tackle - a rod with significant backbone coupled with an expensive fixed spool reel, something like an Accurate, Shimano Stella or Daiwa Saltiga. Also make sure you wear a glove when fishing heavy braid under what can be extreme pressure, together with a butt pad.
Home made poppers can be fine providing you 'through' rig them with wire otherwise the GTs will just rip the trebles off the lure. Commercial ones like the Yo-zuri Surface Bull are great back-up lures though. And you'll need at least triple strength trebles matched to heavy split rings - Owners are probably the best.
If you have the time available could I suggest that you perhaps post to the Caranx English Top Water forum. You'll find the respondents extremely helpful and fanatical about GTs. And many will have fished the Andaman Islands.
Just one last point - it might be worth reading this particular thread regarding makingHome Made Lures. It contains some really helpful tips.
Finally once again my apologies if I've been 'clumsy' with the way I've worded my observations - all I'm trying to ensure is that you have a successful trip.
Every success, and please post back to this forum with details of your trip.
All the Best
Dave

Mike Tyson incarnate?
Hi Indian Angler
Brian may well have wondered just what you were planning to take on. There's an interesting bit of banter on this thread, albeit a tad theatrical, between a UK 'virgin' and some Spanish anglers about what to expect from a Giant Trevally.
Still want to go 'toe to toe' with one? Seriously, enjoy!

More on Trevally
Thanks for all your inputs. Looks like we found most of the stuff we need to go after Trevally. There is some cause for concern, especially after reading some of the posts!! Apart from GT , we are also supposed to get big barra, snapper, wahoo and grouper.
Seeing your concern for a couple of idiots, who aren't too sure what they're messing with, more tips, advice and funny stuff would be more than welcome.
There's only one way to find out in the end I guess, is by going toe to toe with toothy critters.

i've caught wahoo, amberjack, barracuda and sailfish, all but the amberjack in the andaman sea.these strong big GT'S i think maybe mono would be better than braid just because it is more forgiving because it will stretch before breaking

homemade poppers
Hi,
Just starting to make our own home made poppers. Had been doing some research and have chosen a couple of designs to work with. Basically have no choice but to make them.... you don't get poppers here.
We are planning on making some in rubber and the rest in wood. Will keep posting as they come along.... suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

Specialist Web Sites
I guess more and more of us are tempted, often as part of family holidays, to fish tropical and sub-tropical waters. But also, as referred to in a recent posting, there're places like the deepwater fjords of Norway where more specialist jigging (and lure fishing) techniques are employed.
As well as the Caranx forum I mentioned in posting #3 this very active Singaporean forum - also in English - appears to offer alot of specialist advice for those wishing to fish surface poppers or deepwater jigs. And possibly some of the techniques they use are transferable to 'extreme' situations in this country.

Thanks Panama J
Hello Dave,
Thankyou for the link to the Fishing Kaki Forum. Its really given me a better perspective of what I'm up against. All the guys I've spoken to have very happily told me I'm going to get smashed with the tackle I have
. Thankfully the GT don't get very big according to them...... I guess 'BIG' is a relative word!!
Things are shaping up well here. Spent the morning at the customs office trying to convince an officer my split rings weren't actually silver
Had to still pay duty inspite of telling her they were for our personal use.I got the braid as well (80lb Power Pro and some Berkley Whiplash) Should collect the first batch of poppers from my carpenter tomorrow. So I can spend the weekend painting them and getting them ready.
Trying to make some trolling lures as well.
Thanks again for the links.
Regards,
I.A.
