    Saltwater fly fishing in Cyprus

Going on holiday to Cyprus in 2 weeks with the missus and the kids and was planning to take my fly travel rod, reel and a few saltwater flies.

Anyone know what my chances are ? I'm on for catching anything that moves

    Anyone tried it ?

    Cyprus

    Hi Violet
Cyprus isn't a part of the world I've fished. Unless you get any first hand experience from this site could I suggest that you post to either the International Forum on ukswff, or the English Forum on medflyfish. Both are likely to have respondents that would have fly fished in that part of the world.

    Best of Luck
    Dave

PS Well I won't ask you how you determined your nom de plume, Violet. Or should it have been a 'man called Sue'? Sorry, only joking.

    Unhappy

Violet, I wouldn't bother, unfortunately the cypriots have destroyed they're fishing industry, both commercial and pleasure, you do get the locals fishing for what i would think is white bait in the harbours, they also advertise tuna fishing from about 6-7 miles out ... if you survive the boat trip ... one fishing technique that was used was dynamite ... sorry for the bad news but i'd be surprised if you catch anything worth reporting here. ps enjoy the sun etc ... yes i'm jealous and missing it, cheers

Panama Jack - Violet is the name of my boat (Lady Violet to be precise) - I've often wondered if people thought that I may be a bit of a Mrs Doubtfire !

    Thanks for the info

I guess that I'll have to save up for that bone fishing trip in the Seychelles

    Seychelles Bonefish

    Hi Violet
The Bonefishing off places like St Francis Atoll is superb - the fish are plentiful albeit not the average size of places like the Bahamas or Florida Keys. And as well as the Bonefish there some reasonable GTs, BIG Milkfish (which they're now starting to catch) and lots of other species. Just to make your mouth water have a look at the photograph of this huge Barracuda one of our members caught without a wire shock leader.

It's only downside though is it is expensive. There're a range of other lodges in the Caribbean where you're likely to get 'more bangs for your buck' and there's much more chance of a 'double'.

I love to develop this further but expecting DHL to arrive any moment to take my laptop 'off to the doctor's'. Should be back 'on line' in 4 to 5 working days though.
    Kindest regards
    Dave

What a fantastic fish that Barracudda was !

I've been stillwater fly fishing for about three years now and always enjoyed sea fishing as well but living in the Midlands and having two young kids the opportunities are not that often.

However, I have just bought my first saltwater fly rod and reel along with some bass lures and now can't wait to give it a try - combining two great fishing methods. The hit you get when fly fishing for decent size trout is great. I can't wait therefore for that first bass on the fly
