    Egypt (Red Sea).... again!

OK, I have trawled the net (excuse the pun!) for fishing in the Red Sea... diddly squat info on spinning from the shore... does anyone have any info at all???

Going to the Soma Bay area in October which is 20miles south of Hurghada... surely someone must have played with poppers for Cuda or Jacks.

All bits and bobs gratefully received... oh and I've searched here and gleaned the couple of grains that exist

    Cheers

    David

    Egypt

Hi David, and welcome to the forum.

You mentioned having trawled the 'Net, but have you looked at previous posts regarding Egypt on this forum?

I'm aware that there are restrictions on shore fishing along certain parts of the Red Sea coastline, those designated as Marine Parks. But for specific information you may wish to contact EgyptAngler via the site's Private Message (PM)facility. He lives in Egypt and appears to have a very detailed understanding of the angling opportunities.

Here's one of his earlier posts - http://www.worldseafishing.com/forum...ighlight=Egypt. Click on the url and then, whilst in the post, click on his name - in the block to the left of the text - and that will give you a series of options, one of which allows you to PM him.

If others with specific information though don't reply you may additionally want to try the Egyptian forum on http://www.tripadvisor.com, that might possibly have relevant posts in it.

One way or another we'd certainly be interested to learn of your experiences there. Please post a report once you're back.

Hi Dave, I was in Sheik El Sharm last year and it is possible to get a fishing boat, all very hush hush and money slid under the table. It was just bottom fishing many miles out (Presumably to get out of the protected waters) and all in all it wasn't very good at all, brightly coloured reef fish, all very small. The problem is because it is all done privately you really haven't got any come-back should you not be happy with the day. Don't get me wrong, we still had a great day, snorkelling and the Egyptian hospitality on the boat was first class, but as a fishing trip it was really a waste of time. On returning to the hotel I chatted with other prople and found that their experiences were very similiar. Basically the Egyptians don't want their No.1 attraction for tourists, the fish, upset and so generally frown on fishing.

@Panama yes I'd read the posts here as well

@Curly I'm off to the Hurghada area - well 20 miles south of it and unlike Sharm it isn't a reserve - and fishing appears to be reasonable - I've spoken to one guy who runs a boat from Hurghada and there don't appear to be the same issues as with Sharm.

Boat fishing may not be an option - family holiday, so I'm going to be doing a fair bit of shore spinning with surface lures... prime targets I suppose are cuda and jacks.... but anything that tugs on the line will be welcome!

Yes, I'll post my experiences here when I get back - who knows I may become the Red Sea guru

OK I'm back today... spinning from a pontoon with lures NO fresh bait... 7 barracudas, a lovely Trevally and an unknown horrible looking ****er! I've seen a piccie of it but have currently no idea of his name.... I'll post full details and thoughts over the next 24 hours!

update the horrid ****er is a Squirrel Fish - rather small red/white and noxious looking with horrid spiny dorsal fin!

    Seanyboy...

I didn't post again because I was depressed looking at your piccies. Then I thought well... he caught them from a boat and my conditions were off a marina wall in conditions that weren't ideal. Biggest 'Cuda was about the 2ft mark and the Trevally a Yellow Spotted one me thinks, was about the 5lb mark...

And nine fish on a family holiday is pretty good going... well had bog all since I've been back!

    Sharm for Xmas

    Gents,
I'm in Sharm for Xmas for a week with the memsahib. I'm living in Italy for a couple of years so have booked through an Italian Travel Company called Sprintours at Plaza Beach Resort. Snorkelling is apparently brilliant and I've read all the threads about no fishing around Sharm, but it is interesting that the Italian Company's brochure and website actually advertise "deep-sea fishing" as one of the available activities. I shall see what it's all about and update you on my return. (Might just sneak some travel spinning gear into the case while the wife's not looking!!).
Bet I don't get anything like my Lake Nasser trip last Feb/Mar, but you never know do you??!!

The no fishing zones are within the national parks which are from the coastline to only a short way offshore.
You can fish from hired boats (no particularly good ones) and head outside of the park.

    Hi Dai
Can't personally add to that observation but one of our Club's German members has I know fished there on day trips offshore. Let me try and get some information from him.

I know as well that, I think it was this years CIPS/FIPS World Trolling Championship was held in that part of the world. There may possibly be details on either the EFSA or NFSA web sites that could assist. From memory though boats were having to run long distances offshore.

This thread also, from another web site, might well also add something to the mix - http://www.caranx.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=2107.
