import tax on fishing tackle in mexico?

I have just read on a travel information site that there is an customs tax payable in Mexico if you bring in your own fishing tackle. The site was geared more towards the American tourist does anyone know if this is true and what sort of taxation could be expected?

Yep, there's a good chance it will be true!

Not heard any stories of Mexico, but I know that in a lot of African countries, it can be as high as 100%.

This 100% is on invoice value, and if you are officially declaring it, you must produce an invoice.

You could however just breeze through the "Nothing To Declare" exit with the gear in your suitcase, but I wouldn't reccomend that in Mexico, unless you like the idea of a bunch of Federales "questioning" you!

Drop Master Baiter's PV a PM. he will know, but I believe it is only if you are importing tackle and will not apply to your own gear if you are taking it home again with you. I enquired last year (when I went) about buying tackle while there. If you can find a tackle shop it is very expensive, so I asked Bass Pro about getting an order sent to my hotel. They said that I would get stung very heavily for import duty, so I did not bother.

    Hi Millser
Just got back from Cabo San Lucas, Baja California. Took eight rods, and eight reels, and wasn't the only one; every other American tourist was carrying a Bazuka full of rods. Was stopped and searched by security coming in and going out and paid nada in duty or charges.

On the other hand, my wife's dirty laundry (that's the story I'm sticking to!) took our main suitcase over the limit and we had to pay $75 in excess baggage surcharge.
