Gran Canaria - Puerto Rico
Hello All,
Me & the missus are off to Gran Canaria (Puerto Rico) in a few weeks.
I am hoping to do some fishing out there (rod will be sneaked into the case!), and I would be grateful if anyone could give some advice on fishing out there.
Looking to possibly do some bottom fishing off one of the charter boats; has anyone fished there before? Any advice/suggestion/recommendations on boats/skippers/species expected etc?
Also may do some shore fishing while i'm there, and any tips would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Al

Puerto Rico
I fished there about 5 yrs ago, both off the harbour wall & off 2 charter boats, had a half share in a 180lb Yellowfin Tuna (the guy who's turn it was in the fighting chair when we had the strike, took a wobbler halfway through, so I boated it as it was my turn next)!
We had Dorado (dolphin fish) both days, one day about 20 of them, & bonito by the bucketful, the locals play a hosepipe up in the air so that the drops resemble small fish breaking the surface, this gets the bonito into a frenzy, they were filling their boats dangerously close to the gunwhales with them, & they were going to a fish processing factory to be turned into fish meal & fertilizer.
One thing that really got on my nerves was the way they insisted that instead of taking the rod out of the holder, they wanted you to just turn the reel handle & winch the fish in, in case you lost the rod overboard! I told them to stuff that as I was an experienced angler & refused point blank to winching the thing in, they winged but a few others joined in & they gave in eventually.
There were 3 or 4 English run boats there & one Spanish boat (who seemed to come back with a few good fish every day) They did have a bouy out for bottom fishing (about 700ft deep! bringing up mainly guitar fish & eagle rays) didn't fancy that at all!
Fished off the harbour wall at sundown with floating crust & had mullet & bream using size 14 trebles buried in the bread.
If you can get away with it take a telescopic 30/50lb class boat rod a multiplier with 30lb braid & some rapala's or yizouri crystal minnows, take it with you on the boat & tell them you will use your own tackle & if you lose it its your business! those dorado love those rapalas, & you wont get them as standard on the boat!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Blueskip, ifo gatefully received.
I'll definitely have to scheme a way of getting the rod in the case, without the missus seeing it!? ha!

Gran Canaria
Hi Dan
Good advice from Blueskip. Probably you'll find though that the 'summer' game species are a little thin on the ground cum November, but there may still be some Wahoo and BigEye Tuna around.
As to your original question about bottom fishing most of the boats will put together mixed groups at around 50 Euros a person. And they operate from Puerto Rico and Mogan. (As well there may be some charter boats based at Pasito Blanco, but in the main you'll find private boats there.) Here a couple of urls so you can see what's being caught - http://www.bluemarlin3.com/ and http://www.marlincanariasportfishing.com/.
In that the island's volcanic in origin the water gets deep very quickly! So if you determine to take your own tackle to bottom fish you might need 300 yards of braid on the reel. As well as rays they also get Conger Eels and things called Amberjack. The latter can grow up to 70 to 80lbs and are great fighters, although if you hook them near the bottom their swim bladders will quickly blow and then it's essentially weight you're hauling up. As well as catching those on bait they will take jigs.
Also if as Blueskip suggested you do decide to troll with your own gear - often they'd troll out to the bottom fishing marks - make sure that you rig a safety line on the reel. There's a lot of pressure on the rod butt in the holder and, unless it's of aluminium construction there's always a possibility it might break.
Many, many years ago you used to be able to catch Bluefish, another member of the 'jack' family on small livebaits or rapalas in the commercial harbour at Puerto Rico. But pollution from the mass of tourist developments has tended to drive them away. It might be worth checking though if any have worked their way back. You'd just need lightish spinning gear for them, but make sure you pack wire traces - they've very sharp teeth.
