there are plenty in the river systems around somerset.
However, unless licensed it is illegal to remove them! this includes signal crayfish

Hi Steve
Wriggitt is right: It's illegal to set traps for crayfish without a license, and licenses for crayfish traps are only granted for scientific research at the moment. The EA has just launched a campaign this month against illegal trapping, so it might be better to use alternative ways ...
... such as, if a bit of dead oily fish were to fall into a landing net left lying in a swim, attended of course, then the crayfish will find it. If you catch them in muddy rivers I'd leave them in a bucket of clean water to purge for three to five days, then introduce them to Mr Stirfry.
Enjoy!

I contacted the goverment fisheries agency in bridgewater (contact details are included in the free crayfish trapping information packs which are available)
From the impression I got Bristol and surrounding rivers are basically out of the question for crayfish as our native lads are still going quite strong there (which is a good thing)
Ive been pointed in the direction of cirencester as a good area to look at as the american crayfish (signals) appear to have quite a strong hold around there in paticular the enclosed lakes
Im looking for fisheries in and around that area who will grant me permission to fish in their waters (and has a nearby hotel!). If I find somewhere nice then i'll post it here
Has anyone got any recommendations?

can't remember the name of the river, but it is the small one which runs through withington.this has a large population of signals if you can find access to it.perhaps having a pint at the mill inn will give you a chance to see this river as it runs through the beer garden
2011 species. pouting,whiting,3 bearded rockling,dogfish,poor cod,turbot,pike,perch,flounder,bass,codling,bleak, mullet
