    fishing in kenya

Hi All, I'm off to Kilifi in Kenya for a few weeks through December.

I've never been before, and while the web shows me that there is some awesome sport fishing to be had offshore (if I can afford it), cant find anything on the shore angling scene.

If anyone has been to Kenya, particularly Kilifi, can you please let me know your thoughts!!

    Cheers all!!

Not sure about Kilifi but have been to Malindi and Mombassa a few times.
Basically all along the coast there, is a reef about half a mile offshore and between the beach and the reef is very shallow water. Its great for snorkelling but mainly beautifully coloured small reef fish. To get into serious action you would really need to get out beyond the reef which would of course mean boat fishing. Its a while since I last went but some of the locals would take you out in there small outriggers for a small charge but it can get pretty rough. There are occasional gaps in the reef where the local boats make there way out into the open sea.
I can remember watching a local fishing boat come in and they had a large Kingfish -about 5 feet long in the bottom of the boat. Or at least it would have been 5 feet long but on reeling it in-something had attacked it and bitten it clean in half! You can only imagine how big it must have been to bite that in half!
Even if you dont take your rods-a snorkel mask and flippers are a must-as its some of the best snorkelling in the world.
The serious game boats though are very expensive as you have already found out by the sound of it.

Thumbs up thanks for your reply

    Cheers Moray,

Sounds pretty Idyllic really. I've never been and to be honest really wouldnt have thought about looking at it, but cant get a reasonable flight to my usual winter haunt, Bali! The G/F suggested Kenya, and its been an eyeopener!! it looks beautiful!

The big game boats are expensive, so may try the more rustic approach!!

Other than that, even tho we are staying all inclusive (for under 600quid - unbelieveable!), we will be exploring the surroundings a good bit. Have you had a chance to have a look around, if so, any recommendations on people and places??

    thanks alot!

Hi Frags, try James Adcock at Mtapa creek for some reasonably priced big big game fishing.
He is a white south african and his wife is english, they are both very helpfull and knowledgeable.

    frags,

no shore fishing on that coast as it is a marine reserve, you can't even take a shell off the beach.

re boats, you should be able to get a place sharing on a boat with a couple of other people
