Yak Fishing Match
Hi Guys please forgive me if this isnt the right area of the forum for this. If it isnt please feel free to move it

Some members of the Whitby fishing forum have decided to organise a kayak fishing match within next summers Scarborough Angling Festival. The festival has traditionally only run shore and boat fishing matches but the lads came up with the idea of making this years event a little different by including the areas first ever kayak fishing competition. Spokesperson for the event Ray Maddison says that there is growing interest in kayak fishing on the Yorkshire coast and early signs are that the area has some fantastic sport to offer kayak anglers. At the present time details of the match are limited but after a recent meeting of the Scarborough Angling Festival Committee the event has been added to the 2008 festival itinerary for the second Saturday of the 9 day festival and the following details have been released.
Kayak Fishing Match At Marine Drive Scarborough.
Date : 27th September 2008
Fishing Times 8am - 12 noon.
Heaviest fish match.
Boundaries are from the Sea life centre to the lighthouse with a limit of approx 800yd which will be marked with buoys.
The match will be held over the slack water period and there will be a safety boat at hand.
There will be a significant prize table with both cash and tackle prizes. Tri Star Angling and Ocean kayak will be sponsoring the event and have donated a kayak as one of the match prizes.
If you are interested in sponsoring the event please get in touch with myself on 01947 604395. Further information on this match will be released via this page as and when we have it (so please add this page to your favourites). It may also be worth while keeping an eye on the Whitby Fishing Forum for future updates.
I will endevour to post any updates here as and when they arise.
Please feel free to copy this post and use wherever you like.

hmmmm, might have to dust off my old kayak, used to paddle a lot in my younger days so hopefully should still have what it takes !
Just need to figure out where to stow my kit as my boats an old Lynx high volume slalom kayak, works great in the rough stuff, surfed some fab waves in its day! Maybe I'll be able to rig up an outrigger, strap a few BDH bottles on and see how it goes
Would love to invest in a new boat but they aint cheap, hell I might even win myself a new one !!
At this stage i'll defo be along for the jaunt !

Hi Guys, cheers for your responses. Hopefully we will see as many of you at the event as possible. You do not need any qualifications to fish from a kayak although it is always advised that you make yourself as safe as possible. There is lots of information on kayak fishing safety on the numerous related sites across the net.
With regards to this event, In order for the committee to accept the event into the Scarborough festival we had to satisfy them that the event would be safe. Hence the 800 yard limit meaning all the kayaks will be in eyesite of each other and there will be a safety boat on hand to help anyone who gets into trouble.
Obviously this is our first event so we are probably being over cautious. Future years may see roving kayak fishing events just like the roving shore fishing competitions we have up here. But thats for the furure.
Glenn
