I would say anything over 2lb tc. My personal prefrence would be 2 3/4lb test curve, thats what im currently useing, would maybe go for 2 1/2.
How far do you need to cast? casting pva bags?

assume you are fishing a stillwater,if not a 2.5t/c will struggle with anything above mid teens.

2.5 is plenty unless you are casting long distances.

Used to take 20's on a pole with a 20 elastic... nuts, but doable.

With a rod, 2.5 is tonnes, unless you are looking for long distance casts or casting heavy weights.

If you are stalking then you can go lighter, but you do need enough back bone (or be brave enough to hold on until the varnish on the whippings creak) to steer them from snags.

For me its more down to how snaggy the water is so 2.75 to 3.5lb on hard wild waters such as Cassien, the Orient and especially the Ebro where Catfish are a likelyhood. I think though if I was fishing an English Gravel pit with no snags I'd go for a 2lb Barbel rod and have a bit of sport.

hi in my experience of carping i think the test curve poundage has very little to do with coping with a 20 its far better to use balanced tackle...and a reel with a good clutch ...quality mainline and patience cheers andy
