Don't be so fussy mate. It doesn't matter AT ALL but some folk actually have the cheek to correct you if your opinion doesn't fit theirs!

It's far more entertaining to call everything a cod — which they ARE, just the same as a puppy is a dog — and sit back and watch all the anal retentives getting in a tizz.

Then if you catch a double, call it "just a codling" and everyone will be really impressed!

I used to believe it was at around 7lb, but now I know better - it is an experience thing:-

as a codling becomes experienced enough to NOT take my bait or lure, it has passed a right-of-passage and become a cod.

Some years they seem to manage this at about 2lb, other years it is when they are 6 or 7. Must be fast growing but (mentally) immature those years !

The old standard round my way used to be anything under 10lbs is a codling...Perhaps that needs revising in the current climate..

If i go by the 10lb rule ive never actually caught a proper Cod.

Personally I'd agree with the fact that there is no such fish as a codling, but, just to put in my pennyworth, weight would have nothing to do with it. It's quite amusing when folk attach a specific weight to a 'cod' but in reality it would only be age which would govern it. I had a cod just over 4lbs and 26 inches long in early october. If I caught the same fish in January it could be a couple of pounds heavier at least.

I think a jack is a male pike, which don't usually weigh more than a few pounds. All the big pike are female.

As for codling to cod.................................no idea
