Bait elastic

Hi everyone

I have a lot of trouble with using bait elastic especially at this time of year when it only takes a minute for your fingers to get frostbitten

Does anyone have any tips on how to tie bait on (e.g. sandeel, squid, bluey) quickly and securely?

In particular

1. What's the best way to start and finish your bait elastic whipping? Some people have said you can just wrap it over itself and pull it tight before you cut it but in my experience that just comes undone

2. How do you hold the hook while you position the bait and do the whipping?

Cheers

mainly use pennels, so stick ur bait on bottom hook then stick ur top hook through then holdin the hooks so the shank is to the left in ur left hand just bind a load of elastic with ur right hand around ur bait around the shanks of the hooks nice and tight(be careful with soft baits like rag etc cos u can cut right through it) finish off with a good few winds n the same place then just pull and snap off.

^ Is how I do it and can be done with gloves on.

Hook away from the body and wrap some parts tight and then loose and tight again. This should not come undone.

Disposable rubber gloves help one heck of a lot in this weather too - prevents that horrible cold feeling as the wind hits your hands!

The best way I have seen frozen , almost defrosted sand eel done was to use two at a time ( gives big scent trail as well ).

With a decent pair of sharp scissors cut one sand eel down from its mouth to its tail , lay it on a bait needle and then lay the line alongside the needle usea bit of elastic to wrap it on just enough to hold in place.

Cut other sand eel the same and place it on the " spit " so that the cut is 180 degrees round from the first , now whip on with a reasonable length of elastic ensure the hook end is partly up from the end so it stick out the wrap about 1/2 inch from the end .

Don't forget to remove your baiting needle .

You now have two close contacting oil /scent exuding ,mummified sand eels that can stand up to a decent cast without falling off .

When i bind my bait on with elastic i start at the eye end of the hook and wind about 2 turns over the bait and end of the elastic to trap it down then carry on winding down towards the other end of the hook and back up diagnal or at an angle, when i get back to the eye end of the hook again i just wrap another 3 or 4 turns and pull sharply to snap it
The only thing is, when reelin in to refresh the bait its a bit of a bugger to get off if its still on the hook
