The service is not being disbanded altogether, it is being changed, and moved. Yes there are money / social / political reasons - but.......
Crews, Support and Maintenance staff will still be required at Glasgow - any reason why Prestwick staff cannot be located here including the training that will be required for the S92 aircraft?
Casualties are very often unloaded in the Glasgow area at the Southern General or RAH hospitals.
SAR helicopters often have to land at Glasgow already to refual after a drop-off.

I'm not saying I support the change, but I don't think it's a complete disaster altogether?

They are indeed Tickety, usually when they are fallers with head injuries. They land and refuel all over the place when on SAR work. Often when working in the Solway 177 has landed and refuelled at West Freuch, meaning they can stay longer on a job and get back to it quickly after refuelling - I hope they still let a civilian SAR unit do that, it has never been a problem for the military. Like every change only time will tell if it results in the same excellent service we currently enjoy, I certainly it does.

normally when anything gets privatised, the quality of service usually takes second place, in importance, to cost.
cant see this going any different.
