Mike came in this afternoon to show me his catch which included a very unusual fish about 2 feet long and very thin.It would have weighed no more than half a pound and was similar to a Gar Fish but withouth the long snout. It was the colour of chrome and had a slim sardine type tail
Any ideas?
John.

Mojacar Angling Club News.
Mikes boat fishing trips were quite successfull last week with the usual array of small fish plus a few big Triggers and Gurnards. This week I'm pleased to report that at least one big Swordfish (Judged by Mike and his guests to weigh 100lbs) has moved in shore and was seen to jump three times and tail walk in front of his boat.Mike also caught small Tuna, again a good sign.
Sundays are as always a beach or rock fishing afternoon/early evening.Meet at the Beachcomber Bar on Mojacar Playa at 4.30pm and go from there at 5pm.4 MAC members fishing the Macenas rocks last Sunday caught nothing and I'm afraid it was another blank for me,Worm Farm Bob,Andy from Arboleas and Karaoke Craig from Mojacar.
The first Friday of every month MAC fishes a competition and the 7th October will be a beach, rock or arm fishing day depending on sea conditions. The Indalo arm seems to be offering up a few big fish and if the sea conditions permit and there arent too many people already there this could be the venue. If not then the Macenas Rocks will be the alternative as its the perfect mark for most conditions.Fishing from the beach is still proving poor as far as we know.Meet at the Beachcomber Bar at 12 noon and leave at 12.30pm.We will fish the competition from 1pm til 6pm.
4 MAC members fished a lake near Lorca on Wednesday 28th September.
Barry from Arboleas caught one small Barble and around 40 Mirror Carp to 3lb,the latter taking the days pot.
Beachcomber John (Me) also caught one small Barble and 39 Mirror Carp to 1.5lb.
Craig from Mojacar caught 4 small Mirror Carp.
Ninja Brian from Arboleas caught 12 Mirror Carp to about 1lb and 3 TURTLES and is now well in the lead for capturing MAC's "Turtle Bowl Soup Cup"
MAC coarse fishes every Wednesday and on 5th October is fishing the lake near Calasparra where we have had good days and have also lost very big Carp.Meet at the Overa Hotel before 8am at the Albox junction of the A7/E15 motorway.12th October venue is still to be decided.
MAC is organising a trip to the River Ebro for big Carp.A small Carp there is 20lb's and Catfish are to up to 212lb.We are planning to leave Mojacar Monday morning 17th October, stay for 3 or 4 nights in a hotel close to the river and local bars and restaurants.Rates €48 per night per room inc cooked breakfast.
The other costs are fuel and possibly permits if required and the dreaded licence fee which we are in the process of ordering in advance of the trip.A years licence is €9 plus €6 fee.
For further information on any of the above see John at the Beachcomber or tel 950 473 099.

Mikes boat fishing trips were quite successfull last week with the usual array of small fish.A good sign is the 1000's of Mackeral in showls chasing small fry.Hopefully these showls are being followed by larger prey such as the Swordfish being regularly seen inshore now.
Sundays are as always a beach or rock fishing afternoon/early evening.Meet at the Beachcomber Bar on Mojacar Playa at the earlier time of 4pm and go from there at 4.30pm.5 MAC members fished Macenas Rocks on Sunday 2nd October where I landed a Black Goby and a Saddled Seabream.Junior member Tasha (8 years old) landed her first ever fish,a Black Goby.Blanking the day were Tasha's sister Sharna and dad Steve from Mojacar and Bill from Turre.
7 MAC members fished a lake near Calasparra on Wednesday 5th October.
Jim the Poacher from Antas made his day and took the pot with a 4lb Common Carp which was among 12 fish he landed on the day.
Barry from Arboleas caught one Barble and around 75 Carp, mostly Commons to 3.75lb which was just short of Jim's best.
Casa Verde Barry fished his pole expertly as usual to land around 200 fish for a total weight heavier than himself.Best fish a common Carp of 3lb.
Beachcomber John (Me) caught 60 Carp, mostly Commons to 3lb and saw nothing of the monster I lost there last week.
Kevin from Hastings landed 50 fish, mosty Common Carp to 1.5lb and a few Mirrors and a Karasan.
Bleeping Sean (Who gets his new nickname from his battery operated bite indicators) caught about 10 or 12 Common Carp to 1.5lb.
Ted from Arboleas bagged 10 or 12 Common Carp to about 1.5lb.
Ninja Brian from Arboleas didnt fish this week as he was visiting Terrapin friends around local pet shops and was probably accompanied by Worm Farm Bob who's wife is now letting him sell a few of his treasured worms.
All in all it was a good day out and we are returning to the same venue for next weeks Wednesday fish on 12th October.
For further information on any of the above see John at the Beachcomber or tel 950 473 099.

Sea Licence
Can you tell me how to obtain a sea beach only fishing licence. I completed a continental licence form and sent it to Arboles, they returned it with another form, the orginal was a photocopy and different, they are also asking for payment, but the information leaflet from Los Gallardos Town Hall, states that pensioners are free, can you clarify this for me please, the only other type of fishing I am intersted in is flyfishing as as far as I can found out is a German run fishery in Valencia.
Regards Paul

Sorry I missed your post Paul.A beach licence is obtainable from the "Medio Ambiente" ministry office in Almeria. The cost is 5 Euros (3 Years) unless you are over 65 and then its a free licence for life.
If you want help filling in the form I am happy to you as it has to be done right and I have the forms to hand.I can also give you better directions for the ministry. You are not far from me so call just to make sure I am in 00343 950 473 099

Swordfish
It was intriguing to look back at that September posting regarding the Swordfish. I know that (Broadbill) Swordfish - Xiphias gladius - will, on occasions, jump but it's quite unusual and I've never heard of them tailwalking.
Are you sure that it was a Swordfish and not perhaps a White Marlin, or even a Spearfish? The structure and length of the bill is the obvious 'give-away' even from a distance.

Rio Seguro
Hi John Don't know if you have been to the Seguro I recently stayed at the Hotel Cenajo, next to the Embalse Cenajo. Its only a five minute walk down to the river where there is a 8k length of fishing. The the normal range of course fish plus trout and a fish farm keeps stocks high. For fly fishers its very difficult (high Reeds) but worth a look

Sorry for missing your post and I hope its not too late to answer. There is a loophole still even after Andalucia have made it nigh on impossible for non spanish speakers to get a coarse license. You will need an up to date British coarse license and €105 Euros and it can be done.I can be contacted on 0034 950 473 099,best wishes,John.
P.S.The €105 inc a 5 year license inc trout and a third party liabilty insurance.

Hi Jack,as I wasnt the one who saw the fish I wouldnt know but on a trip from Ibiza to mallorca I once scared what I judged to be a swordfish but I dont think Ive ever seen a white marlin and if they are very similar then it could have been, best wishes,John.
P.S.Sorry about the delay in answering........
