Seaford Cod Sept 1 2007

Fished Seaford in front of Edinburgh Rd 10-4 last night HT at 2.50.

As a prelude my brother's brother in had a lovely 5lb Bass on mackerel the night before and also caught quite a few Mackerel + Gar at night on float fished strip.

So my trip got off to great start with a 1lb 12oz cod first cast to fresh out black lug. The usual September run is here. This was low tide + about 1.5 hours and about 2 minutes before the angler next to had one too. "Here we go" I think, this could be good. Then 5 hours later at 3 a.m. that was all I had to show.

However, I did predict that the bass would turn up after high and the bites started at about 3.20 on the big mackerel fillets. But not Bass. My brother and I had a large horse mackerel and a big mackerel between us then I missed a good run. I chucked out the fresh makerel head and started to pack up about 3.45. Then the bait runner set off steadily and I struck into something very solid indeed. On for 20 seconds then PING! The knot pulled on the pennel and I think it was because the fish was hooked on the top hook and it slid down to put pressure on the bottom hook knot. I usuall tie pennels so that this cannot happen and I certainly will in future. The fish was certainly over 4lb based on others I've caught this year but how big I'll never know. Gutted.

As I left my brother pulled in a 1lb Bass so they were about as predicted. Can't wait for the next run of night tides and hopedfully conditions will be right again. Interesting that the Bass the night before came to a freshly caught mackerel as did my 'one the got away'.

A great day I suppose including my Adur session (Bass, Mullet, Cod & Mackerel all over 1lb) but it's hard to get that biggun out of my head.

Alfred Pennel III has a lot to answer for. Ive lost some good fish when that happens. Even 3 inch bream can knock the knot out after 3 turns round the shank. Like you say its best to tie them both. Nice one on the codling tho.

Nice night by the sound of it Judge, perhaps I should have stuck with my instincts and gone there as originally planned. Instead I went further along from you, up near the Beachcomber. Fished from 8pm through until 4.30am

Total for the night: 2 palm sized Thornbacks (both took whole squid on a 3/0 pennel!!!), 1 small Eel and 2 Whiting.

Didn't see much else caught either from blokes along from me - a very quiet night.

Will try harder next time on the night tides.

Tie them like spade end hooks and it won't knock the knot out.

Nice Coddling.

do you reckon its worth taking a trip down there to target the codling as i live a fair distance away i dont want to go unless there should be some around, is it worth it?

hi yeti,

not sure if its worth travelling all that distance for as the cod numbers dont seem to be loads but there has been a few caught according to reports. pevensy has also produced a few this week. all i would say is keep an ear out to see if any more cod reports appear on here before you decide upon making the trip. i would by no means say that they are a dead cert as reports seem to suggest its one or two (or none) per angler so definately not prelific but if you lived more locally i would say its worth a go but as ever with fishing you could make the trip and not see one.

if it was me i would wait a few days to see if any more appear before traveling. its a bit different if you only lived 15 mins away then i would say give it a go as youve not wasted much time. hope this helps
