Not so. The cracked guide weakens the line, it doesn't cut it so it could break at any point from rod tip to leader.

Thanks guys, forgot to say I checked the guides but will look more closely, I suspect that could be the problem.

Not quite sure what you mean by incorrect, maybe I should have put "it may also weaken the line rather than cut it". I had exactly the same problem as described by the OP, did the test as described, found a cracked ring liner, replaced the ring and haven't had an unexplained break since. It saved me getting another batch of line and having the same thing happen. Or, maybe I imagined the whole thing and I am totally wrong o_O

Mr newell ,I find this slightly harsh especially coming from a man who bought himself a new boat , & couldn't even manage to tow it home without turning it into a mangled heap of shredded fibre glass !!
Ps hope u was insured !!

I think I jinxed myself replying to this thread! Sunday my rod fell off the trolly I was using to take my gear down to the boat; I joked with a member of the crew that 'I dont want to do that too often, a guy on last weeks trip cracked an eye... blah blah' I fished for a while without problem for an hour or so then had a proper bite and *Ping* braid snapped! Checked the tip eye and it had cracked!
