Hi All. Been a while but I have been flat out and had a few health problems, so booked the day off from the office and dusted the lure gear down for the first trial sesh of 2017.

Up at 6am and headed of to a mark that I worked hard to suss out last season. Arrived at the mark and sea conditions were perfect although a little colour to the water. Worked out my starting point and clipped on the big patch.

Had a few follows and then my friend turned up and said had anything??..As I turned round and said not yet mate but its looking good there was hell of a thump about 10 yards out and the Stella was screaming with that glorious note!. I laughed and shouted decent fish on mate. Took me by supruse the sneaky devil!!.. fish wasn't stopping and heading way out to sea. Heart was going and good solid head shakes it was certainly nice to be back in the mix!. Couldn't get to my phone but my friend managed to take some snaps of the scrap and fish in the water. Fish was way to heavy to lift so tried to guide it onto the rocks with no avail. Had to bite the bulet and wrap line round my hand and lift it, line slicing my fingers in the process. Got the fish onto the angled rock in front of me I was buzzing. As I bent down she kicked and line grazzed over the rock then PING!!..the beauty went sliding down the rock with patch firmly engulfed completely down its throat. Nothing I could but listen to the splash and watch her fly off before getting a pic with her. I'm not going to dwell and can only say she was a decent fish :(.

Only wish I could have got the lure out as I very much doubt she will survive with that engulfed.

I fished on but the water colour soon turned to bad so decided to head to another area.

Clipped on a Sunslicker Gibbon paddle up in Sandeel. A Fantastic soft and caught me endless fish last season. First Cast to a turbulent patch of water an two twitches in a whack Im in lol. Spirited fight and landed another Silver bar. Busy over the next few hours with fish up to 3.5lb. Plus a bonus first ever sea trout :)

..unfortunately I can't show all the photos as they give to much of my marks away :p.

Thanks to you all again for the advise and pm''s over last season. The advise and techniques have helped me no end!;)...

Tight lines all

Nice one mate
Shame to lose the big one
Maybe a long handled net
I use one now as I fish big rocks
Lots of times they run in between
Buggers to get out

Nice session ....bad luck on the bigger one .......

You are not the first , and you won't be the last person to lose a lure and big bass ..........

Seen it lots times with rubbish leader knots , people reeling in , left with a curly pig tail of braid ,,,,,,,,,,,

Sure sign , the leader knot slipped ......

Hope you nail a load more ...........nets not for me , but understand on some marks where they could be useful.

Cheers Mark. Was a cracking fight and couldn't stop it. Had no option to follow the fish around some hairy rocks from the flat bay I was fishing.

Managed to lift it on the very bottom part of rock (not the slope) with the swell helping but When bending down to pic it up she kicked and braid scrapped over rock and the rest as they say was history.

Brilliant read and pics mate ! Tidy stuff!

"Better to have hooked and lost .. than not to have hooked at all!"
On another day.. fish might've wedged in rocks and not slid back in!

My mate lost a stonker in open water... leaving a Gunny in it's gob... opted to try a cheap reel he'd bought ....warned him tho'.....drag seized... tug 'o war' .... snap!
I can still see that fish .. massive!
Ya live and learn!

Mark, you're arguing against using a leader when in all probability a leader would have saved this fish.

Frankly, stories like this are the greatest advertisement for barbless hooks, single hooks and leaders there is.

The biggest ever bass I hooked and LOST that bought tears to my eyes ,
As you know bubba was nearer 14 pound than 13 ,,,,
This thing was far bigger ....
I had It on for 11mins , in very strong current ( that's a long time I assure you )
Never really got it under any control , but I got it half on , and half off a sand bank ,,,,,
Where it thrashed about , and GILLED MY LEADER ,,,,,,,
Gutted does not even come close ,,,,, my best guess 17 pound after seeing it 3 times ,
I still think to this day if I just had power pro ( what I used at the time ) straight through , I would have got this fish ..........
So I'm leader free and nearly always will be .......
You my good man , can do as YOU please lol......

As for barb less , I believe the lure in joycey boys fish , was nearly out of sight ......
Are you really going to tell me barbed or not , singles or not it was coming out , pmsfl ...............

I have always said , tree huggers that want to catch bass on fairy fluff , with barbless hooks made of unicorn horn , then land them in a lush rubberized net , then lay them out on a silk pillow ,should really take a long hard look at themselves , and ask if this BLOODSPORT , is for them ............

There the same t,,,wats , that then go and HANG them on a flicking boga , and do far MORE damage to a large bass than any hook ..............

People that can't HANDLE BASS , and need a boga cause there scared of a hook , a fin , a gill , are the ones that shouldn't be fishing for um in my honest opinion .......................pathetic ....

Hi SCG

I did indeed use braid straight through as I did all last season without a hitch.

It was a guttening moment what happened and can asure you no reasonable diameter leader would have stopped what happened. The way the fish kicked and wriggled off wrapping line around the sharp barnacle rocks in doing so.

You have to appreciate the tricky situation I was in and where the fish led me. With no other way of trying to land (which it was landed) other than where I did. It was a freakish moment between getting my breath, placing my rod down and bending down to grab it.

On another mark I would have chosen to use a leader but without giving away this particular mark away you would never have expected me to end up trying to land from the location the fish hit.

I wonder how many people have had a bass take line and snap them off without seeing the said fish. Is this scenario more acceptable I wonder? Having a fish swim around with a lure and load of braid trailing off it all be it in a different scenario?

It was a terrible moment but one that I did everything possible to land it with intention of removing the totally engulfed lure which indeed may have led to heavy bleeding in trying to remove.

A forgotten net left in house rushing to get the first trial session underway. A valuable lesson learned as my second season kicks off!

Great vid just released from Duel (promo for new 'Heavy Shot Lipless minnow!)
Very 'Gowery'/West Wales/ Cornish'...the marks fished during the vid.

Lots of visual info on tackling such marks and .. esp gear used.... and where to target lure
  • timing your casts in surf over rocks
  • short casts between the rocks
  • longer rods to manage lure and swing in sizeable fish..
  • 40lbs rubbing/shock leader
All good stuff..............

Very informative Kerrdiff.. looks very familiar ground!. thanks for that mate

Would love a commentary lol but you get a good feel for what he is doing and best of all it obviously works. 40lbs leader sounds heavy but when you look at the ground he is fishing I can see why etc

Don't stress it dude, shiit happens! Everyone has left a lure in a fish at one time or another and never on purpose.
It has happened a few times to me, the most memorable were when a clip failed on a very good fish hooked at my feet on its first run, was that one my fault? Yep I must of over used the clip and the metal got fatigued.
One of the other times I was in the boat and a fish snagged me, after a bit of faffing the fish came free, I played it to the boat then like a total plank went to lift it aboard and the badly damaged leader snapped. I still have not forgiven myself for that one but would of never got it to the boat without a leader ;-)
