Vass chest wader review...

Having picked up a new pair of chesties today , a first impressions review is in order.

I’ll not mince words and say they are awful!

Who on earth designed these and what were they thinking?

I fell for the blurb and what reviews i could find prior to buying, upgraded/like reinforced Oceans was what i was hoping for...

The waders come with 4 fixed buckles for attaching the straps-3 female and 1 male...the 1 male buckle is in the front right position...

Image

This means that that the only female connector has to attach there...

Image

And here’s where things go silly, the 3 female connectors offer adjustment in the straps and the 1 male does not...you guessed it, they have ‘cleverly’ given 2 adjusters at the back and one at the front.

I have had the waders on and off approx 15 times attempting to set the straps but no joy as yet.

How will i adjust them while out using them?

A. Take someone with me as chief strap adjuster

B. Find someone to assist (could be iffy if out on a 2am night op)

C. Take them off and adjust them myself every time they need adjusting

Also note the brace used on the strapping, for some strange reason they have gone for one that crosses the straps, this is not necessary and creates pull in the material while wearing them...

This is a missed opportunity by Vass.

If you want some decent waders i can recommend you do not buy the Vass ones.

i have these pair of waders to i belive me the straps may be s*** but the boots wont brake and start leaking after 4 trips, these are by far the best waders you can buy for under £100 i dont think alot of people want to spend £300 on a custom pair that lets face it they are all going to rip sooner or later abit of pvc or neopreane is never going to last if your jumping over rocks crabbing or fishing and bait digging in them, my pair lasted me a year they now have reapir kits all over them im gunna use them for crabbing and buy a new pair just for fishing.

Hey Fella,

Yes the actual wader part seems fine and look like they'll last but the buckles and straps arrangement are a serious let down. For me they are useless if i cannot adjust them while actually wearing them.

This is a missed opportunity by Vass to put what should of been a decent set of waders in the sub £100 market.

If i wanted clown trousers i could of gone to the joke shop

Hopefully the review will prove useful for those considering them.

I hope to send them back unused as they are not fit for purpose in my eyes.

Have a look at these.... http://www.mainwaringsfishing.co.uk/SNOWBEE-600D-WADERMASTER-CHEST-WADERS-1121.asp

and a little video

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XXLK21eJFlY

Had mine a couple of years, worn them fishing from very sharp/ rough rocks numerous times and not a hint of damage... The belt bit allows me to role the top down with them still staying up and wear them as trousers too when it gets a tad warm... When these eventually give up on me I wouldn't hesitate getting another pair:thumbs:

Im surprised to read this,I have vass chesties and they are a great bit of kit, extremely tough and comfortable.
As for the straps,I adjusted them to my spec and that was it,havent had to touch them since....the straps havent stretched or anything like that so was just wondering why they would need to be adjusted whilst fishing.....just curious thats all....:)

Hey Richy,

I would be using them for far more than fishing, bait pumping-athletic crabbing etc...

The ability to fully adjust them while wearing them is vital in my book/experience, to me they are a 'nearly set of chesties'.

The lack of full adjust-ability while wearing them seems to of been left out in the marketing spiel.

Probably fine for an occasional user ...no good to me though.

They have been sent back.

I was talking to Chris as VASS UK today and he has been reading this thread with interest.

It might be worth a mention that the male and female buckle on the right hand brace is so you can use the braces as a belt when rolled down into a waist wader (as per the attached image).

As an aside, Vass’s are always keen to take on board customer feedback. So it might be worth e-mailing them any constructive feedback regarding these or any products to r&d@vass-uk.com :) The guys at Vass are always keen to listen and taken onboard suggestions so, drop 'em a line :)

I adjusted the straps on my Viking of Denmark waders when I bought them nearly 10 years ago and haven't adjusted them since. As a ghillie and fisheries consultant I spend nearly every day in waders. All I can say is if you think the Vass are poor then what ever you do DON'T BUY OCEAN ! Have a look at the vikings at SJFawcet of Lancaster if its pvc you're after.

I was straight on the phone to Vass to complain (give feedback) don’t worry lol

The woman took my name and number and said the Chap would get back to me when he got back from holiday/having a few days off...he never did!

Sadly the waders primary function (that of being a good set of chest waders) was sacrificed in order to accommodate the roll down belt option...shame!

Ocean are nothing like the quality that they used to be and thats a fact. Glad your happy with yours but they wouldn't find space in my shed these days. Shame as they used to be the industry standard. I was told Vass stoped distributing them because of the down turn in quality. I've tried the Vass but they don't have enough room or stretch for me otherwise they look a good product.

Well I was meant to be away fishing in Weymouth but given the weather situation that was abandoned but on my return I had an e-mail from Chris who thinks he has solved the brace issue thanks to the WSF threads feedback.

He has asked me to put it on the thread, and so I will - with attached picture.

I’m pleased to say that we have looked at the issue raised by your forum member and come up with a solution. I have attached the new braces which now include easy front adjustment on the right side as well as the usual left side. This solution still allows the wearer to use the braces as a belt when the waders are rolled into the waist positionJ Production of this wader including the new braces should start pushing through to our stockists by October 2013, slower selling sizes may take a little longer. I hope everybody likes it.

As this review is back ill put my 2p worth up.
Had my vass a little over a year now which isn't long I know but I fish at least 3 times a week, sometimes more, long walks across sharp rocks, climbing small cliffs ect so they have done some serious milage, probably 3 years worth of work.
The bottoms of the soles are showing signs of wear (nothing serious though) as would be expected from this kind of abuse.
I sliced the side of the boot about 3cm up from the sole on some broken glass, superglued it and puncture patched it.That was six months ago and the repair is still holding fine.
Recently I had a tiny leak, on top of the toe of the boot (where it flexes when you walk) I have puncture patched that and at the moment it is ok.

All in all I can fault them due to the abuse they have had,no issues with the straps either.
I feel as though any other wader would have fallen apart the way I have treated them.
Will I buy them again?.............dam right.

If assault courses, barnicle covered rocks, cliff climbs, thorn bushes and other demanding terrain are your thing then vass are are good choice In my honest opinion.

I've never owned a pair of waders before and I've been giving these some serious thought.

One question though, I take a size 12 shoe so should I buy the 12s or should I buy the 13s? I've read a few opinions and some people swear to buy a size bigger when it comes to waders. Would ideally like to try them on before buying but not really an option unless my local tackle shop were to order them in specially. Not worried about the adjusting issue, I'm using them purely for fishing a handful of times a year.

Thanks in advance.
