The Ice Plant, Kilmore Quay, Co Wexford

The Ice Plant, Kilmore Quay, Co Wexford
Written by WSF

You're fishing from the seaward rocks that form the east quay of the harbour. The ground out about 25-yards is rocky with weed over it in places, plus there are old digger tyres sunk amongst the rocks. Beyond the rocks is clean shallow sand. Fishes best during the flood tide any time of day, but especially early morning and late evening.

SPECIES
Corkwing wrasse, ballan wrasse, bass, mullet, rock gobies and tompot blennies. Longer casts take dabs, flounder and occasional plaice. The biggest flounder show in the winter, with winter night tides seeing whiting and dogfish.

BEST BAITS
Ragworm is the key bait for corkwing, small ballan wrasse, gobies and blennies. Mullet take small sections of rag, mackerel flesh and bread under float tackle. Crab is good amongst the rocks for bass, though plugs and spinners also score.

TACKLE
Fish light spinning rods or float rods with 6 to 8lb line for the wrasse, gobies and mullet. A 1-2oz spinning rod and 10lb line is better suited for the bass when fishing plugs, but fish 15lb line if ledgering crab to combat the snags and barnacles.

Use standard 5oz beachcasters for winter fishing at night with multiplier reels and 15lb line with 60lb shock leaders. Top rigs are two-hook clipped up and three hook rigs with size 1 Aberdeen hooks.

GETTING THERE
From Rosslare Ferry terminal take the main N25. Turn left on to the R736 signposted Kilmore Quay, then left again on to the R739 in to Kilmore Quay village. As you come to the roundabout the east Quay is to your left. There is waste ground parking immediately to the left of the roundabout out of season, or turn right at the roundabout past the harbour and there is a large car park on the left just a couple of hundred yards away.
