RNLI Sea Fishing Safety Event
Max Jones, Lifeboat Sea Safety Officer for Angle Lifeboat Station and Emma Lewis of Milford Haven Port Authority, are working together to raise lifejacket awareness among local fishermen. Although fishermen are generally aware of the risks inherent in their profession, there have sadly been three fatalities in the past few months in the area of Milford Haven. Many fishermen feel that a lifejacket may restrict their movement when working, but it can also save a life. The RNLI lifejacket campaign seeks to encourage the use of a lifejacket in all but the safest situations. It also encourages the regular maintenance of lifejackets, as many of those examined during the free RNLI lifejacket clinics were found to be incapable of working, often due to minor, easily corrected, problems. Given the right information owners could ensure their reliability easily and cheaply.
With the summer season approaching and the anticipated increase in activity from sport and part time fishermen, it has been decided to hold a two day Fishing Safety Event at Milford Haven to give fishermen free advice and the opportunity to try several styles of lifejacket for comfort and ease of movement.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th of April 2009 are dates for your diary if you are a rod & line sport fisherman, part time potter or professional. The RNLI Sea Safety Roadshow display unit will be at Milford Marina along with expert Sean Friday, who has been working on fishing safety and will be bringing samples of lifejackets trialed for use by fishermen. If you think a lifejacket will restrict your movement too much, now is your chance to try on one of these tested lifejackets to see if there is one that you could work in.
Modern lifejackets often incorporate a system that uses CO2 gas to inflate a bladder stowed within a low profile cover. These lifejackets are very reliable provided they are looked after properly. “A lifejacket is not a 'fit and forget' item”, says Max Jones. “Care and regular maintenance will help to ensure it will work as required”.
The RNLI Fishing Safety & Lifejacket Clinic invites to bring your lifejacket. Volunteers will then advise on issues such as correct fitting, user checks and maintenance; hoping to ensure that the ‘customer’ goes away with a thorough understanding of how to keep that essential piece of kit working. Also, visit the RNLI Sea Safety web site for more comprehensive information. www.rnli.org.uk/seasafety
Boat, diving, yacht and sea-angling clubs could be host to a Lifejacket Clinic. Request further information from the web site email link or telephone Sea Safety on 0845 122 6999.
It’s FREE so what have you to lose? After all, as Max says – “You may only get it wrong once!”
