Great North Run RNLI Fundraising
Fund Raising for the RNLI (BUPA Great North Run Sunday 20th September 2009, half marathon or 13.1 miles)
I started running, very slowly and over very short distances in late August 2008. My father a runner for over 25 years and now in his seventies had to retire from running when his knees finally said enough is enough!! I decided to take over the family baton.
I caught the bug and only other sportsmen/women like you will understand how that happens. I decided that I would like to try and run the races my father had chosen to do and I have entered a race a month starting with a 5km run and have taken in three 10km (6.2 miles), two 10 mile runs and a half-marathon in Lydd-on-Sea near Dungeness in Kent. I wanted to compete in the BUPA Great North Run because my father had run it on several occasions and it looked “fun” with a fantastic atmosphere.
I have taken my training seriously and am now running an average of thirty miles a week so that I feel comfortable doing another half-marathon and doing it justice. I hope to finish at around one hour fifty minutes (Lydd was just over the two hours).
My fund raising page on the Just Giving website is justgiving.com/wendypullen. This website is used by many people either raising money or giving money to charity. It is an entirely safe site and any monies donated goes directly to the charity involved, without the sponsored person/persons becoming involved in collecting/handling or holding any money. Please visit the site and read all about it.
It was set up in 1999 with their “dream” being to help charities to raise money via the web at low cost. Almost no one believed it could be done. They now have over 6,000 member charities and have raised 370 million. All profits are reinvested in the business and charities appreciate the simplistic nature of the site, together with its transparency.
Like most people I have charities that are important to my family and myself. However, my husband, Shane Pullen, a boat and shore angler and contributor to Sea Angler magazine, is obviously like yourselves aware of the importance of the RNLI in your lives and are the first port of call if you get into trouble whilst either fishing from the shore or a boat. I therefore decided to run for the RNLI.
They are entirely funded from donations and are a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service to every 100 nautical miles out from the coast of the U.K. and ROI. They also provide a seasonal lifeguard service on beaches in the east, south and south west of England and South Wales.
The RNLI is independent of the Government and continues to rely on voluntary contributions and legacies for its income.
During the year 2007 the lifeboats launches 8,141 times and saved 306 lives. The lifeguards during the summer season attended 8,201 incidents, saving 62 lives and assisted 9,883 people.
To buy an all weather lifeboat costs:
Severn class (refit) £255,000
Tamar Class (new) £2.7m
Inshore Rescue
Rescue watercraft £6,000
Lifeguard inshore rescue boat £9,500
D Class Inflatable £31,000
B Class Atlantic RIB £160,000
It also costs:
£1,048 to kit out an all weather lifeboat crew member, £1,012 to kit out an inshore lifeboat crew member and £480 to kit out a lifeguard .
I would like to extend my warmest thanks to Mike Thrussell Jnr and Terry Cascars for agreeing to publicise this fundraising venture and believe me when I say that every penny donated goes a long way to securing the future of the RNLI. It will also help me to get over the finish line!
