Vitória (ES) – Wales was the country with better performance in the male competition at the first day of the World-Wide Fishing Championship, at Camburi beach, this Tuesday, in Vitória. With 61 captured fishes and total weighing of 7.500 grams, the Welshmen had surpassed the Brazilians that had fished the largest number of fishes (83), but had lost on the total weighing (7.260 grams). In third, comes Portugal with 72 fishes and 5.853 grams.

In the female competition, Italy was the best and captured 20 fishes, having nothing less than 1.558 grams in total weighing. In second, comes Spain with 24 fishes (1.556 grams) and in third, Croatia with 16 fishes and 1.493 grams. Brazil, in the female competition, finished in sixth with only 20 captured fishes (1.199 grams).

At the male individual, the fisherman Nelson Coimbra, from Portugal, was the best and caught 33 fishes and 2.959 grams in total weighing. Eduardo Metzger was the best from Brazil and finished in eighth with 16 fishes (1.497 grams). At the female individual, Spaniard Sandra Dellafuente was the best with 11 fishes (765 grams). The best one from Brazil was Érica Martins, in seventh, with 5 fishes ( 423 grams).

In the first two hours of the competition's first stage, the fishes were found next to the sand. In the two remaining hours, the competitors had been obliged to search for the fishes far from the sand. It was registered the presence of baiacu fish, that with its sharp teeth, had given some work to the fishermen.

The first day of official dispute didn't have great incidence of fish, witch disappointed the Brazilian team. "We have trained sufficiently in Camburi beach and we were expecting more fishes. Since it had little action in the fishing rod, the stage turned into a lottery, depending almost exclusively of the luck and very little of the technique", said the Brazilian team's captain, Márcio Maciel.

The England's captain, Richard Brosser said that his team has great expectations for the next days of the competition. "We are more used to places where there is more presence of big fishes. The hot weather has made it difficult, but we are adapting quickly", he commented.

The Croatian Katarina Urcan said that the presence of few fishes harmed her first day of the championship. "We were hoping for a more exciting stage. Let's see if in the next days we will have more action and less wind", said her.

On this Wednesday, the Praia do Riacho beach, in Guarapari, hosts the second stage from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. On thursday the delegations will compete in Regência, Linhares, from 10 am to 2 pm.
