Lazy Lug – Preserved Lug Worm Bait
Lazy Lug are small preserved blow lug worm and said to be the invention of a well known Dutch competition sea angler who was looking to produce a bait that could be shelf stored for up to a year without degrading.
The worms have been preserved in a special non-toxic, biodegradable liquid solution that when handled smells not dissimilar to alcohol based liquids. The worms feel slightly waxy to the touch, but remain firm, hold their true shape and look just like normal small blow lug.
We seem to be at odds with some other reviews in other publications as, after a fair amount of testing, although Lazy Lug did catch a couple of fish for us, we can’t honestly say that it’s produced that many fish for the hours tested.
Our test fishing was with two rods, both rigged with identical three-hook flapper rigs, one with frozen lug baits and the other with the lazy lug. Casting distances were as near the same as possible and kept close together to target the same fish.

We chose frozen lug baits to compare the Lazy Lug with as we felt that putting the lazy lug up against freshly dug baits was not a fair and valid test. Frozen lug rarely fishes as well as fresh worm, hence it being a better comparison.
The Lazy Lug bait did catch three dogfish over five test trips, but the frozen lug accounted for numbers of whiting, dabs, flounder, dogfish, several 5 bearded rockling and two small turbot.
Judging from our personal results then, certainly the Lazy Lug will catch the occasional fish, but in comparison to even frozen bait it cannot compare, either for the number of fish caught, nor the variety.
Possibly some anglers, especially those living away from the sea, may like to have a tub or two of lazy lug on the shelf ready for that spur of the moment trip, and in that it will do a job, but the serious sea angler is always going to choose frozen and fresh lug as his main bait choice.

The worms come in plastic containers averaging between 19 and 25 worms per 100g tub and retail for around £4.99 in the shops.
