Review: Fenix HP 11 Headlight Written by Colin Albert Fenix have released a new headlamp - the HP11. This uses 4xAA batteries giving a maximum output of 277 lumens using a Cree XP-G led, and is waterproof to IPX-6 standard. The headlamp consists of a head unit that incorporates two switches and a separate battery pack at the rear. This gives a good weight distribution whilst avoiding any dangling cables. The two switches provide on/off/ mode selection on one and power level on the other. Power modes are 277 lumens (3hr 50mins), 133 lumens (9hr 30mins), 55 lumens (25hr), 4 lumens (206hr), there are also strobe and SOS modes. These timings are based on 2500mAh batteries. The output is digitally regulated to ensure a constant output and will not decrease as the batteries discharge. The light can be switched off and on in any mode. This can be useful when bassing – you can switch the low level on and off without the need to cycle to the higher settings. The two medium modes are ideal for general fishing with excellent runtimes.
The beam is quite a tight spot and can illuminate over 150m on high mode. A flip up diffuser is included that can be clipped onto the head unit to give a more diffused light. Fenix have improved the switches on this light and they have used large buttons that are easily accessible and can be used with gloves on. There is also a switch guard on the head unit so when the light is not being worn and is folded back, the switches will not be accidentally activated in your box or bag. The battery back has an O-ring seal to prevent water ingress and uses a large aluminium nut to seal the unit closed. This nut is knurled and indented to allow easy grip even if wet or using gloves. AA batteries are the best option for UK users – they are readily available and cheap, and you can use rechargeables or disposable alkaline batteries.
Fenix have obviously learnt from the earlier headlamps and incorporated several improvements into the HP11.
If there is one criticism, then it’s the headband. This is supplied un-assembled, and needs careful study of the photographs to assemble correctly. Overall the build quality is excellent and Fenix back this up with a 24 month guarantee that is supported by a UK based dealer network. Register your guarantee online and it is extended by a further 6 month. This is an excellent headlamp for anglers, and retails at £54.95. I bought mine from The Photon Shop. www.thephotonshop.co.uk Comment... |
