Humpalumpa Folding Fishing Cart

Humpalumpa Folding Fishing Cart
Written by Jim O'Donnell

Sometimes strange items arrive at the office door for review. You really do get to see it all. Earlier this year we had one of these experiences! A large parcel arrived - the knife came out - the tape got cut - only to reveal... two, huge rubber tyres! On closer inspection the item turned out to be a fishing cart by a company called Humpalumpa. In an office of ‘boat anglers’ and with the item described as a “Folding Beach Cart” nobody was forthcoming to take on the review. With another agenda on my mind (turning the Humpalumpa on its end, adding a seat, steering, 2 front wheels and turning it into a go cart) I jumped at the chance!

On getting it home it still had to be reviewed, so I set about thinking what fishing uses I could put it to before it got pimped? I fish boat, I mullet fish, and I do live bait and lure fish for bass (which doesn’t require a cart to carry my tackle) but I don’t beach cast or need to lug a heavy tackle box around with me ever! Generally if it doesn’t fit in a rucksack I don’t take it, so how on earth was I going to test it fairly? The following week it came to me!

It was half past three in the morning and I was going bass fishing, from a local beach, until mid morning. During the summer I like to free-line using live sand eel, and when I do, I use a 5 gallon bait tank to keep my eels healthy. I find the size of this tank, with its powerful 12v aeration system keeps my bait dandy. The only problem is... it’s a nightmare to carry a big battery, 5 gallons of water and your tackle! What’s more, water seems to continually slosh out on the long walk. As my wellies filled with water, I suddenly thought of my Humpalumpa! Later that afternoon on my return from fishing, I set about adapting my Humpalumpa. It now has a huge battery attached to the back and a 5 gallon bait well strapped to the front. No more wet legs when walking to my favourite bass beach anymore! That’s just one of its wilder uses - let’s get onto what the Humpalumpa was really designed for.

The Humpalumpa has been designed to a size that it is perfect for carrying a Shakespeare tackle box. With a maximum payload capacity of 75kg, it can carry more weight than any angler would ever need to ‘hump’ around. Whilst I’ve converted mine for transporting sand eels along the beach, I also use it to lug heavy kit from the marina car park to the boat. What used to take me three journeys, now takes me one. Not only that, but on the way home, back up the pontoon ramp, the Humpalumpa makes easy of work of a big cooler box full of fish after a good day with the lads.

I’ve used it camping and on days out with the family too. Aside from those of us who are lazy and would rather not carry, it would be a handy bit of kit for any angler with a bad back. Made from powder coated steel, the Humpalumpa only weighs 8.2kg and can be folded down for ease of use when transporting or storing. But the key to the Humpalumpa’s uniqueness lies not just in its construction, but in its wheels. The huge Wheeleez pneumatic balloon wheels take the shock and will roll over sand, mud and wet grass without sinking or ploughing in, unlike normal golf-style wheels on other angling trolleys (they really would make top go cart wheels!). The Humpalumpa also comes with 2 quick release webbing straps.

In Conclusion
The Humpalumpa would definitely suit anglers with a bad back or anglers that struggle (or don’t want to) carry their tackle. It would also suit beach anglers who want to transport a large tackle box some distance. On the Humpalumpa website they point out that it also doubles as a rod rest! For us boat anglers and boat owners, the Humpalumpa is a handy tool for transporting lots of heavy gear to the boat. It doesn’t come with a 5 gallon bait well, but with one, I can now walk for miles along the beach without having to lug my tank lob sided.

The Humpalumpa is not going to appeal to everybody but for those of you like me, that don’t like ‘humpa lumping’ your gear around, it’s a handy bit of kit. As for my humpalumpa... I’ve decided I’m not going to turn it into a go cart any more; I will just have to put up with pram wheels and some 2x4 just like the good old days. My Humpalumpa is staying in its original form to lug boat gear to and from the marina car park, and for my beach bass fishing next summer!
