Sea Angling in Donegal Written by Mike Thrussell The Guide to Sea Angling in the Donegal Region of Ireland is the latest in a whole range of informative guides covering most of the Irish coast, that over the years have rightly become collector’s items. It’s written and compiled by Norman Dunlop, Sea Angling Advisor to the Central Fisheries Board. Norman’s no stranger to the pages of WSF as he and I have worked together for over 20yrs compiling scores of magazine and web features. His vast experience comes to the fore in this book and you’ll not just learn about the best marks within the region, but also the best techniques, baits and much more. Written in full colour over 64 pages, this A5 sized guide begins with a section detailing the species you’ll most likely contact with brief identification details, plus it lists the specimen weight for each species, and has a handy reference sheet covering the North Region sea fish records. This follows on with chapters on terminal tackle including superb colour diagrams of individual rigs suitable for both shore and boat fishing and how to fish them, also the best rod and reel combinations for specific circumstances, and a chapter on the best baits to use. The north region is then split in to four distinct areas with applicable maps covering Lough Foyle to Lough Swilly, Northwest Donegal, Bloody Foreland to Ardara, and Glen Bay to Mullaghmore, each map carrying a key box indicating by symbols slipways, charter boats, key towns along the coast, also sandy and rocky shorelines within that area. The individual top marks within each area are they identified by a number for easy location within the written text. In all 77 different shore fishing marks and charter boat stations are detailed giving you plenty to go at. The book is superbly written, and full of information and top tips to ensure you catch fish, plus it’s fully illustrated with colour photographs throughout. The guide is essential reading in the initial planning stage before any prospective trip to this area and becomes a “friend with local knowledge” when actually fishing. In short, it’s excellent!
