Sekard Big Game Trolling Lures
There are literally hundreds of different trolling lure patterns available, but finding something different with a genuinely logical design concept is a rarity. Sekard Technology, based near Doncaster in the United Kingdom, have pushed lure design further forward with their new and increasingly wide range of big game trolling lures designed for the world market.
Sekard have done their homework. Their head design shapes have been chosen only from the tried and tested shapes that have continually caught record fish and been consistent takers of fish over the years.
You have a choice of the BIG NOISE which has a scooped out face and angled rear body pushing water up in front of it and popping as it travels making stacks of noise as the name suggests. The HOGS HEAD is a straight faced lure pushing a large amount of water up in front of it and creating massive disturbance. BROADSWORD has an angled face with a long body giving lots of water disturbance and surface skitter. The NEMESIS is another water pusher with a straight face and long body, and the HARDPLAY SPECIAL has a scoop face with a forward angled body to give lots of water disturbance with occasional popping between shallow dives. You also have the PATRIOT, a bullet headed lure that works just sub surface, and the THWACKIT an angled faced lure with a short body, again producing massive surface disturbance.
The lure heads are made from ultra clear resin using an advanced vacuum cast resin system. This creates a lure head that is slightly soft to the touch, but is highly durable with good abrasion resistance and suffering a minimum of ultra violet light degradation. The advantage with slightly soft head material is that it feels more natural when a fish attacks, this often seeing the fish hold the bait a fraction longer. Also if the fish strikes and misses the hook but feels the soft head, it is more likely to be fooled in to a making a second attack. Hard headed lures can warn fish that all is not right when the first attack fails.
The heads are moulded around iridescent reflective inserts with a contrasting eye. Move the head around in your hand and you'll see that the reflective material gives off varied and changing sheens of light as the angle of light changes creating lifelike movement. Look closely and the colour changes from pearl through blue, to red, orange, green and purple. This mimics the colours seen in prey and predatory species as they light up when evading attack, and when predators charge in on prey species.
The heads are also made with a full length 3mm diameter non chafe tubing that easily takes 600lb mono leaders when rigging.
What makes these lures totally unique are their evolutionary plastic tails.
The tails are made from thermoplastic in individually engineered strands. Thermoplastic is tough and very durable for a long life. View the strands from the side profile and you'll see they are made in a series of raised sections much like a chain of beads. These raised sections help produce an increased smoke trail of air bubbles as the lure is drawn through the water dramatically increasing overall surface disturbance and visibility from below. This increase in visual disturbance creates a far greater likelihood of a strike. During our testing we've also found the skirt tails to be tangle free.
Another major plus factor with these lures is that the skirts are so easy to remove. It's just a case of sliding one off and replacing with an alternative colour choice to vary patterns. There is no over whipping with floss thread, cutting to size and gluing. The thermoplastic does not take a crease either when stored in a lure wallet should the tail get inadvertently bent over as would many other conventional skirt materials.
The lures work well at relatively slow trolling speeds down to 4-knots, and still give a superb smoke trail. Get up to more common trolling seeds of 7-knots and above and the lures pour bubbles out behind leaving a distinct white road for predators to follow in to the lure.
Sekard also make a smaller range of lures designed for using in front of deadbaits when trolling. These are the Bally Buddy, the Bad John and the Big Bad John. The 7-inch long Bally Buddy has a flat scooped out face with wobble eyes. Run them down the facing side of a wash wave and this pops along making a consistent stream of airborne water and surface bubbles and is proving a great sailfish lure in its own right. We also aim to try this lure on Irish tuna during 2004.
They offer their experience regards skirt colour choice, but will also supply lures with any of their multiple colour skirt combination choices to suit the customer. You can also buy replacement skirts to vary lure colour combinations.
These are excellent lures manufactured by a company that puts real thought and proper field testing in to their products. These lures are already becoming very popular around the world with professional crews including Mexico , Australia , in the USA , Tobago and Panama , and they've already made their mark in billfish tournaments with numerous outright wins and top ranking placements. WORLDSEAFISHING.COM highly recommends them and we feel certain that these lures will become classics in their own right.
