Tronix Tackle
In the mid 1980’s (now that makes me sound old) I was introduced to Pole Fishing (that’s another story!) But the one good thing that did come from my time spent fishing a 12m rod, with no guides or fishing reel, was pole winders. Pole winders, if you didn’t know, are plastic devices designed to wind a pole fishing rig around so that they could be premade and stored ready for fishing. I may not have fallen in love with Pole fishing, but as a youngster it gave me great pleasure to make rigs and then see them lined up in a purpose built tackle box.
When I first got into sea fishing, post pole fishing, part of my game plan was to still pre-tie rigs until one day I realised most of my fishing, looking for specimen fish, didn’t require advance rig making - quite the opposite. It was January and I was digging out my wrecking gear in readiness to catch a big winter Pollack, including a rig wallet of ready-made-rigs. 8, 10, 12 and 15ft traces tied to jelly worms. 8, 10, 12 and 15ft traces tied to Redgills. And 8, 10, 12 and 15ft traces tied to all manner of other lures, all with a swivel tied to the other end – coiled – placed in Sealy bags – lots of them – stored, or rather filled, in my rig wallet ready to be used. The only problem was they never got used. As with a lot of specimen angling, one rig, lure or bait seems to work on that given day, and it would be sods law that I would not have tied the winning combination. And if I had, I wouldn’t have tied enough to last all day, so now I tie most of my rigs as I go along. I’m no match angler by the way.
I can see the need for all competitive anglers to pre make rigs. Speed is of the essence. I can see a need for most shore anglers to have rigs at the ready. You can’t measure and crimp very well whilst fishing. And I can see a need for some boat rigs to be honed the evening before -the skill needed and components that goes into specialist rigs means that many cannot be tied on the beach or boat. But until recently I note that unlike our coarse fishing relatives, sea anglers have never really had any specifically made “pole winding” devices? All hail Tronix!
Tronix, new to the game, have become popular quickly due to the success of their Eva Rig Winders. What a great idea and one that certainly fills a gap since Pole anglers first invented Pole winders! These simple circular pieces of Eva foam are channelled so that the sea angler can wrap his premade rigs around them. No longer will he have to whittle at bits of wood with a penknife, use resealable plastic bags, or cut sections of grey pipe lagging. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but every angler that either wants to, or has to pre tie rigs, now has a winder to store his or her rigs on.

For me, someone who rarely pre makes rigs, apart from bream and conger rigs which I do use my Tronix winders for, they’re perfect for storing my Sabikis and other feathers on so that they can be reused rather than thrown in my lead bucket, in a big knot, to end in the bin – I get through a few. I’ve also used some to store my premade pike fishing rigs with treble hooks.
There is little I can promote or criticize about a handful of simple foam disks. They’re coloured and cannot be broken (!!!) All I can say is what a handy little innovation and I cannot see why every angler wouldn’t benefit from having a pack of ten hanging around, whatever style of fishing is their vice. A great product but the Tronix range goes far beyond their Eva rig winders. It would appear thoughtful items of end tackle are Tronix niche. Hooks, quality swivels, clips & links, feathers & Hokkai’s, beads, lures, booms and readymade rigs all feature in their line up.
Whilst I have not used everything from the Tronix range... their swivels appear to be good quality. I’m particularly fond of their 3 way beads - they make bream paternoster tying quick, and I feel that I get less tangles than I would do using 3 way swivels or dropper-loop knots.

And finally Tronix produce an item, that to me, is a necessity and one that I will always have in my tackle box for bass fishing – Rubber Stops! I like float fishing for bass with sandeel and mackerel live-baits and rubber stops make setting the depth of any float rig quick and simple – sea or coarse fishing. Their wire threaders make them so much easier than tying stop knots, which can be the difference between missing the next drift or not – next bass or not!
Although Tronix fame is for their rig winders which, as I’ve said above, are so simple they are difficult to review – they are what they are – they work as they say 100%, I feel Tronix are a company that have set out to make thoughtful end-tackle products with the angler in mind. I hear this year they are increasing the volume of items in some of their packet products like beads. I also hear they are producing a range of storage systems for their Eva rig winders. This will include 2 kinds - a tube to hold 10 winders, and a box to hold 20. The tube sounds perfect for my feathers, bream rigs and Sabikis. The box sounds great for the match angler or shore angler who uses a great variation of readymade rigs.
