Leadertec Stainless Pliers

These pliers are a popular accessory used by fishing guides the world over.

The jaws and cutting head are made from Teflon coated #420 stainless steel, and the arms from #340 grade stainless steel. The pliers are spring loaded with blue plastic protective grips over the base of the handles.

The jaws are square shaped with serrated grip. The cutter is a moving edge type and really is totally effective with minimal pressure needed. Leadertec say that the pliers can cut through 1000lb stainless steel cable. I only had wire up to 800lbs, but the pliers sliced through it like butter, so I've no doubt 1000lb wire presents no problems.

Also to Leadertec's credit they say that the stainless steel will show slight signs of corrosion if totally neglected. These on test were deliberately used and left with this in mind, but corrosion has been minimal. If you rinse the pliers in warm water after each trip, dry them and spray them over with a little WD40 they'll last for years.

Leadertec have designed an optional sheath to carry the pliers, which can be attached to your belt and trousers making the pliers instantly available to you. Beats looking round the boat or rocks for the pliers when you need them quick. The sheath is tough nylon webbing with a leather backing carrying the belt clip held in place by rivets. The sheath also has a small knife pocket on the inside capable of taking a penknife, or maybe a hook-sharpening file.

I'd highly recommend these, and see them ideal for dinghy and boat anglers who need to make up heavy duty rigs, wire traces or general repairs on deck, rock anglers for cutting heavy mono off to release fish, and I'd suggest a pair in your rig making box at home makes a lot of sense due to their multi use.

Quality is not cheap. The plier's retail at $28.50 and the sheath a further $8.50, but with minimal care they will last years and offer good long-term value. Postage is $3.50.
