Martiini Filleting Knife
There's an old saying that "A good quality knife is an investment" and I'd agree with that. When it comes to knives you tend to get what you pay for.
Cheap knives won't hold a good edge for long, they'll suffer corrosion problems and can even have the handles fall off after just a couple of months. Much better to pay real money and get a good 'un! And they don't come any better than Marttiini knives.
If you need proof how good Marttiini's are, I have a 4-inch hunting type Marttiini I bought as snotty nosed 10-year-old kid and I've still got it. It's been all round the world with me and though the blade is slimmer due to repeated use and sharpening, it is still useable. That knife has lasted me 35 years!
Marttiini are made in Finland. The blade is hand ground stainless steel. It's tough, holds an unbelievable edge that takes the hairs off the back of your hand, and have no fears of corrosion when it's left unwashed with saltwater all over it. The blade also runs the full length of the knife for strength with the handle moulded around the upper end of the blade.
Also important is the material the handle is made from. The Marttiini offers a rubber type handle that gives good grip even when your hands are covered in bait and are wet. The handle is moulded to the shape of the hand for comfort.
You also get a hand crafted leather sheath for both your protection and the knife when not in use.
There are two sizes available, a 6-inch blade and a7.5-inch blade. The 6-inch is ideal for small fish such as flatfish, but I prefer the larger 7.5-inch type for taking fillets of bigger fish like cod, pollack and other round fish.
Martiini's are available from most good tackle shops, but in case of difficulty ask at a Leeda stockist.
