Dysynni Rocks, Tywyn, Gwynedd
MARK DESCRIPTION
A group of slate rocks marking the south side of the Dysinni Rivermouth. The rivermouth itself being made up of mixed gravel banks and rocks claiming lots of tackle. To the left is cleaner sand with few snags offering easy fishing.
Shallow with a depth of just a few feet over low water, but towards the high water mark the beach rises steeply from sand to shingle giving a depth at range of up to 15ft.
METHODS
Spinning in to the rivermouth picks up bass, though netting has seen overall bass numbers decline here in recent seasons. Smaller spinners account for garfish and even sea trout, though a river licence applies for the latter.
Most anglers fish worm, crab and fish baits from the open beach for flounders, dabs, whiting, dogfish, school bass and eels. Thornbacks and small turbot can occasionally be taken at long range.
Standard 3 hook rigs and size 2 Aberdeen hooks are adequate for most situations, but for long range work single hook rigs take the rays etc.
BEST TIMES
April through to June sees flounders, eels, gars and bass taken, along with numbers of dogfish. It's also the peak time for any turbot, though these tend to be smaller fish under 2lbs.
The main summer months can be slow with just odd dogs, flats and bass taken, but come autumn you'll see a mixed bag of dabs, whiting, flounders, dogs and rockling, plus odd bigger bass amongst the school fish. Thornbacks also put in an appearance at this time, though they are at maximum casting range.
Winter gives steady, but not spectacular returns of flounders, dabs and dogfish.
Both high and low water prove productive, but the middle hours of the ebb and flood are often slow and weed can be a major problem here, especially after storms and big tides. Neap tides are okay for winter flounder, otherwise stick to the bigger springs. Both day and night tides produce.
BAITS
Lug and fish baits account for most species, but king rag or crab is favourite for the bass in coloured water. Thornbacks take peeler crab or mackerel and squid cocktails. Try float fishing for the garfish with mackerel strip. Turbot prefer frozen sandeel fished on a long trace.
GETTING THERE
Take the A493 to Tywyn. At the Railway Station crossroads, take the road towards Sandilands and Aber Dysinni until you come to the rail bridge over the river where there is ample free parking. Follow the footpath past the bridge and along the river to the mark.
