Friog Cliffs, Gwynedd

MARK DESCRIPTION
A clean sand surf beach, fairly shallow across it's length, but backed by boulders, shingle and high rising cliffs. Several gullies and scoured out holes run along the beach and locating these when casting increases the catch.

Fishes best in the autumn and early winter from September through to November for whiting, dabs, flounders and late rays. It's also the peak time for the big bass during the autumnal storms.

The Christmas period can be excellent for quality dabs, single large whiting, flounders to 2lbs and rockling.

Late winter and spring produces mostly dogfish, school bass and single flounder to 2lbs.

Summer offers mackerel, garfish, eels, flatfish and school bass. Night tides fish best, especially the hour either side over low and high water. Some west in the wind is an advantage putting movement in the water, but easterlies produce flat seas and reduce prospects.

TACKLE AND BAIT
Two and three hook rigs are best for targeting flounders, dabs, whiting, school bass, rockling and dogfish in season. Casts of no more than 60yds finds the bulk of fish.

Longer casts with a single hook clipped down rig picks up occasional thornback rays to 8lbs, plaice, and stingray have been taken here in past seasons.

Bigger bass come close in after storms and are best targeted with a single hook rig.

Summer spring tides will also see mackerel shoals easily within casting range and fishing either feathers or spinners will catch both bait and supper.

Worm baits are best for overall variety, but carry mackerel, shellfish and squid for tipping off to improve results. Crab and sandeel are best for the bigger bass, and mix mackerel and squid for the rays.

GETTING THERE
Come off the main A470 road west of Dolgellau on to the A493 sign posted Tywyn. Pass through Friog, but as you come to the end of the village take a right hand turn down an unmarked road and pass under a railway bridge. Bear right to a car park on the seafront. The mark can be clearly seen looking leftward from the car park.
