Llanaber Beach, Gwynedd
MARK DESCRIPTION
Llanaber beach is situated just north of Barmouth and is backed by boulders and heavy shingle down to the mid tide line, but then this quickly gives way to clean sand which carries a good surf in southwest and westerly winds. There are deeper parallel gullies running along the beach and it's these that hold the bulk of the fish.
It fishes well during April, May and June for bass, thornbacks at long range, dogfish and flatfish. Occasional plaice and turbot show, though these are usually smaller fish. Whiting appear from late September staying through until January, accompanied by dabs, dogfish, flounder and infrequent codling.
Spring tides produce the best results fishing low water and the first two hours of the flood, then the two hours either side of high water. Onshore winds bring bass and any codling very close in, though settled seas are needed for the rays and whiting.
The beach, being fairly shallow, is a night only venue and fishes poorly during daylight, even in rough seas.
TACKLE AND BAIT
Most anglers targeting the whiting and flatfish choose a two or three hook rig for fishing low water. For the rays, a clipped down one hook rig incorporating an impact shield is the best bet. The bigger bass are hooked on pulley rigs cast close in over the boulders, though plugs and spinners also take their share.
The tide run is lateral and fairly light allowing 5oz leads to hold at long range. It pays to fish a lighter 2oz to 3oz rolling lead for the bass at low water.
Worm and fish baits are used for the general species, but peeler crab outfishes mackerel for the spring rays. Crab baits take the bass, too! Frozen or fresh sandeel, or long belly strips of mackerel pick up the turbot.
HOW TO GET THERE
Follow the Main A470 to Llanelltyd, then take the A496 through Barmouth to Llanaber. Look for the church on the left hand side as you leave the village. Access to the beach runs down the side of the church yard via a footpath and metal bridge spanning the railway line. Limited nearby parking and some walking may be involved.
