Llanbedrog, Gwynedd
MARK DESCRIPTION
Protected on it's western side by a wooded headland, this southeasterly facing beach gets shelter from the prevailing winds, and though mostly clean sand storms can reveal hidden patches of boulders, especially towards the low water mark.
Fish either close in under the headland, or walk eastwards towards the left hand side. The middle of the beach is less productive.
Primarily a low water beach, it produces school bass, flounders and dogfish all year round. Bigger bass arrive in late April, but June is the peak month for adult fish on this beach. September and October can also produce fish in excess of 6lbs.
Good casters pick up thornback ray in May and June, and again during October in calm seas. Tope have also been reportedly hooked from this beach during June, and occasional black bream are recorded, but real distance is vital for these.
Whiting arrive in September staying until Christmas. There's a good run of dabs during the winter with the months of January and February seeing fair numbers of fish over the pound.
Tide run is minimal, but expect heavy weed accumulations after prolonged storms.
TACKLE AND BAIT
Stick to a normal beachcaster and 5oz leads here for all situations. Lighter tackle is okay in calmer conditions, but the bigger fish are rarely within range of lighter rods here.
Three hook rigs baited with worm and fish baits pick out a variety of species during the autumn period, but in the summer choose either a two hook clipped up rig for the bream and flatfish again baiting with worm, or stick to a single hook rig for the bass and rays. Crab and king rag target the bass, but for the rays try mackerel tipped with
sandeel or again peeler crab.
HOW TO GET THERE
From Pwllheli, take the A499 road to Llandbedrog. Follow the road through the village to a car park overlooking the beach. Plenty of parking, but a fee is payable and it gets packed by day in high summer.
